Nine members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) have surrendered amid the intensified focused military operations against them in the province of Sulu, military officials said Wednesday.

Lt. Col. Gerald Monfort, the Army’s 11th Infantry Division information officer, said the nine ASG members surrendered Monday to the 2nd Special Force Battalion and brought along with them two M-16 Armalite rifles, five caliber .30 M1 Garand rifles, and two caliber .45 pistols.

Monfort said the surrenderers were immediately taken to Camp Gen. Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital in Jolo for medical check-up and debriefing.

He said the former ASG members decided to surrender because of the hardships they faced from the sustained military operations against them.

They added that more ASG members are planning to surrender in the next few days, the Army official said.

Brig. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., Joint Task Force Sulu commander, called on the remaining ASG members to surrender lest the military use "the full force of the law to relentlessly hunt" them down.

“With the active support of the local government units and the entire Tausug community, I am confident that the problem with the ASG in Sulu will soon be over. The growing support of the civilians to the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) who are now tired of the atrocities committed by the ASG in their communities is a clear manifestation that misleading the Tausugs with foreign evil ideology and propaganda lies have backfired on the Dawlah Islamiya and ISIS-inspired ASG,” Vinluan said.

The military has intensified the conduct of the focused military operation against the ASG bandits in a bid to rescue the group's remaining hostages in Sulu, including Filipinos and foreigners.
