Senator Panfilo Lacson hailed on Tuesday the convening of
the National Security Council (NSC) meeting as a very rational thing to be
undertaken by President Rodrigo Duterte.
”Convening the National Security Council is one first right
move that any president facing some complex security problems emanating from
external and internal threats that our country is facing should take,” Lacson
said in a media interview.
Malacanang announced on Tuesday that President Duterte will
convene the NSC at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Malacanang to discuss vital
policies and strategies on important matters, including the recent ruling of
the Permanent Court of Arbitration in favor of the Philippines ’
arbitration case against China
on the West Philippine Sea dispute.
The roadmap to peace that was recently approved by President
Duterte and fight against illegal drugs are also expected to be discussed in
the NSC meeting.
”Convening a national security council meeting is a very
rational thing to undertake at this time,” Lacson, a former Philippine National
Police (PNP) Chief, said.
The NSC is a collegial body chaired by the President and
composed of at least 35 leaders-members from the executive and legislative
branches of government.
Members of the NSC include past Presidents, Vice President,
the Senate President, House Speaker, majority and minority leaders of both the
Senate and the House of Representatives, chairpersons of the two houses of
Congress involved in national security concerns and various members of the
Cabinet.
Senate President Pro-Tempore Franklin Drilon said he was
also invited but clarified that there was no threat that prompted President
Duterte to convene the NSC.
”Perhaps the WPS issue and other recent developments will be
discussed,” Drilon said in a media interview.
Two days ago, former President Fidel V. Ramos said the NSC
should convene before he meets Chinese officials regarding the issue of WPS.
Recently, Ramos has been designated by President Duterte to
fly to China to begin talks
with the Chinese officials about the WPS or South China
Sea dispute.
