Government authorities have foiled early Tuesday a bombing
attempt by the Abu Sayyaf rebels in Patikul, Sulu, a top military official
disclosed.
Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, Joint Task Group Sulu commander,
said this came after the barangay officials have discovered an improvised bomb
fashioned out as a landmine at Kilometer 6, Barangay Sandah, Patikul.
Arrojado said the officials were on the way to the barangay
hall around 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday when they discovered the improvised bomb and
reported it to the military troops.
Arrojado said the explosive ordnance demolition and K9 team
immediately conducted “a paneling and clearing in the area” that led to the
safe recovery of the improvised bomb.
He said that several and innocent people could have either
been killed or wounded had the improvised bomb was not discovered since it was
placed along the trail commonly used by the residents of Sandah.
He said the placement of the improvised bomb maybe a part of
the harassment against the residents of Barangay Sandah for their refusal to
provide sanctuary to the rebel group.
The Abu Sayyaf bandits on Monday afternoon harassed the
residents of Barangay Sandah that resulted to the death of an imam (Muslim
preacher) of the place.
He said the rebels were irked by the insistence of the
residents in the area to push through with the concreting of the
circumferential road linking the barangay of Sandah to Tugas, Patikul.
The rebel group opposes the concreting of the Sandah-Tugas
portion of the circumferential road.
Likewise, Arrojado said, the proliferation of improvised
bomb could be the result of the bomb-making trainings conducted by the group
for foreign terrorists in the area.
