From the Manila Bulletin (Sep 22): Army trooper killed in Agusan del Sur skirmish

An Army soldier was killed while a militiaman was wounded when a gunbattle erupted Monday between government security forces and communist insurgents at Barangay Nuevo Trabajo, in San Luis, town, Agusan del Sur province, a sketchy report reaching this city yesterday said.

A flash report reaching the regional headquarters of Police Regional Office 13 (PRO-13) based at Camp Rafael C. Rodriguez here also stated that an undetermined number of suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels was also believed killed or wounded during the fire fight.

Identities of the slain and wounded militiaman were not immediately known as of press time.

Initial report also stated that troops from the Army’s 26th Infantry Battalion (26th IB) were conducting pursuit operations in relation to the abduction of Cpl. Adriano Dela Pena Bingil when engaged undetermined number of NPAs, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

Bingil was part of a team of soldiers deployed for a peace outreach mission in nearby Barangay Mahagsay, also of that same town.

The gunbattle occurred at 7 a.m., and lasted for almost 15 minutes, field report said.
