AFP resumes operations vs Abu Sayyaf in Sulu

From ABS-CBN (Sep 22): AFP resumes operations vs Abu Sayyaf in Sulu

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday morning resumed its operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group in Sulu province.

The commander of Joint Task Group Sulu, Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, said they received information that about 200 members and commanders of the Abu Sayyaf will convene in certain areas in Sulu within the week.

He said the AFP immediately deployed troops in the municipalities of Indanan, Patikul and Talipao, where the bandits have reportedly converged.

The bandits are headed by their senior leader Radullan Sahiron, who is considered as a high-value target by the military. The United States has offered a $1-million reward for Sahiron's capture.

Arrojado said other sub-commanders of the Abu Sayyaf are also expected to convene in Sulu: Hatib Hajan Sawadjaan, Yasser Igasan, Mohammad Said, Muammar Askali, Jamiri Jaong Jawhari and Hairulla Asbang.

Six foreign terrorists were also sighted with the group. Three of them were identified as Mohammad Najib Bin Husen, Muhammad Joraimee Bin Awang Raimee and Mahmud Bin Ahmad, who are linked to Jemaah Islamiyah and believed to be well-trained in bomb making.

Arrojado said these foreign bomb experts have been sharing to members of the Abu Sayyaf their knowledge in making improvised explosive devices.

The resumption of the law enforcement operation in Sulu is also targeted to rescue some of kidnap victims, such as the mayor of Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay, Gemma Adana, who was abducted last April, and foreign nationals including the Malaysian couple snatched in a restaurant in Sabah last May.

Arrojado also asked the members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) in the province not to support the Abu Sayyaf Group.
