The Moro Islamic Liberation Front is optimistic that it will be cleared of blame after investigators come out with the report on the January 25 Mamasapano clash between MILF forces and members of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) that led to the death of 44 elite government troopers.

“I am very hopeful that as soon as the truth would come out, we will be vindicated,” said MILF panel chairman Mohagher Iqbal during a press briefing here where representatives from the Philippine government and the Moro rebel group are meeting about the disarmament of MILF forces.

Iqbal said just like the PNP-SAF, the MILF also lost lives in the misencounter in Maguindanao. He said 18 MILF members were killed in the clash, while 14 others were injured.

He reiterated that the MILF was “not coddling” terror suspect Zulkifli bin Hir alias Marwan, who was the target of the PNP-SAF’s covert mission in Mamasapano.

According to Iqbal, Marwan was “in the company of the BIFF and not the MILF.” He was referring to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, a Muslim militant organization founded by Ameril Umbra Kato that split from the MILF in 2008.

Last Thursday, the MILF and the Philippine government signed the protocol on decommissioning or the guidelines on how MILF forces will be disarmed. The representatives of the two parties said the signing was a proof that they still wanted to pursue peace despite of what had happened in Mamasapano.
