Troopers from the 31st Infantry Battalion, a field unit of
the 903rd Infantry Brigade, have successfully recovered three bucket sized IEDs
(improvised explosive devices) and assorted subversive documents during
operations at Sitio Bagong Barrio, Barangay Sta. Lourde, Barcelona town,
Sorsogon Sunday morning.
2nd Lt. Janeth Barbacal, 903rd Infantry Brigade
spokesperson, said the operations took place 9: 15 a.m.
She added that military operations were undertaken to
liberate area from rebel control as it was reportedly the New People's Army's
base of operations in Sorsogon.
Barbacal said the IED are concrete evidence that the NPAs
are violating the Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and
International Humanitarian Law, to which the Government of the Philippines and
the CPP/NPA/NDF are signatories and bans the use of landmines for it could harm
the non-target elements particularly the civilians.
In Masbate , troopers from
the 92nd Division Reconnaissance Company of Task Group Masbate had a brief firefight
against suspected members the NPA's "SPARU" unit at 5 a.m. Sunday.
The rebels scampered to different directions, leaving behind
their motorcycle which is now under the custody of the troops and will later be
turned over to the local police.
903rd Infantry Brigade commander Col. Cesar M. Idio
instructed his troops to sustain the combat operations and neutralize the
fleeing rebels to ensure that they can no longer threaten the masses and
prevent them from using landmines and IEDs that could harm the civilian
populace.
“We will continue our focused military operations in
Sorsogon and Masbate to ensure safety of the
civilians and prepare the two provinces for further development," he concluded.
