Peace panels of the government and the Moro Islamic
Liberation Front (MILF) Friday separately appealed for the public to refrain
issuing statements that would add confusion on the situation on the ground as a
result of the January 25 encounter in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.
Professor Miriam Coronel-Ferrer and Mohaqher Iqbal, chair of
GPH and MILF peace panels, respectively, issued the appeal after former
government negotiator Jesus Dureza commented that police law enforcement of
high value targets need no prior notice from the MILF as the case of the PNP
operation against Zulkifli Bin Hir alias "Marwan" and his Filipino
aide Abdul Basit Usman.
Iqbal said Dureza's interpretation of the ceasefire
agreement is different from the interpretation of its crafters and the public
in general.
Iqbal said now is the time to move on and the Mamasapano
incident have taught lessons for all the stakeholders.
"It happened and it cannot be undone, time to move on
with the peace process," Iqbal told Radio Station DXMS in Cotabato City .
Ferrer said the peace panels will conduct a thorough review
of the operational guidelines of the ceasefire agreement to prevent similar
incident in the future.
Ferrer also said the incident should not hinder the
continuation of the peace process because at the end of the day it will benefit
majority of the Filipino people.
