Sabah forces profile Mindanao armed group

From GMA News (May 19): Sabah forces profile Mindanao armed group

Malaysian security forces have started building a profile of an armed group from "southern Philippines" that had been linked to recent abductions in Sabah since April.

Eastern Sabah Security Command director general Datuk Mohamad Mantek said they want to see how the gunmen move before striking, Malaysia's The Star Online reported Monday evening.

He said their findings so far indicate the need for cooperation from local residents in alerting authorities as regards suspicious persons.

"That is why we in Esscom need feedback from local communities about any suspicious activities in their areas," he said at a dialogue with the local community.

Mohamad said their findings so far indicate the gunmen wouldn't abduct their targets immediately but would "hide" among villagers at various islands and wait until “spotters” gave them the green light to proceed.

Such profiling would help greatly in preventing such crimes in the future, Mohamad added.

Last April 2, gunmen abducted a Filipina resort worker and a Chinese tourist from a floating resort. On May 6, gunmen abducted a Chinese from a fish farm in Lahad Datu.
