The
military’s 1002nd Infantry Brigade has launched a massive manhunt against a
band of communist guerillas who raided the mining field equipment of
Sagittarius Mines Incorporated in Kiblawan, Davao del Sur Monday morning, the
Army here said.
Colonel
Norman Flores, commander of the 1002nd Infantry Brigade based in Saranggani
province, told reporters in a radio interview that manhunt was still on-going
in the mountain villages in the borders of Davao del Sur and Sultan Kudarat.
About
50 heavily armed New Peoples Army (NPA) led by a certain Joan Casamurin, also
known as “Ka Alvin” of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New Peoples Army
(CPP-NPA) Front 72 first attack the field offices of SMMI in Barangay Kimlawis,
Kiblawan, Davao del Sur, set on fire container vans and other facilities in the
area.
The
attack occurred before sunrise Monday, the Army said.
As
the rebels torched the facilities, another band of guerillas, about few
kilometers away from SMI project site, attacked and disarmed security guards of
a private mining firm conducting exploration activities in Columbio, Sultan
Kudarat and took more than a dozen assorted firearms.
“No
casualty was reported on mining workers. Our troops are hunting the NPAs as of
now,” Flores said, adding that the twin
attacks could be part of a retaliatory offensive by the NPAs following the
arrest of Felix Armodia alias “Ka Jing” early this month.
“Ka
Jing” allegedly led about a hundred NPAs who raided the Matanao police station
in Davao del Sur, killed two policemen and engaged pursuing elements of the
39th Infantry Battalion in a fierce firefight.
