NPA frees Army man 'nabbed' for alleged illegal logging ops — report

From GMA News (May 19): NPA frees Army man 'nabbed' for alleged illegal logging ops — report

An Army corporal taken hostage by the communist New People's Army in Davao del Norte province regained his freedom Monday, a radio report has said.

Cpl. Rogelio Rosales was released in Sitio Tagpopout in Barangay Suwa-on in Kapalong town, Bombo Radyo reported.

According to the report, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte secured Rosales' release.

The corporal was the driver of the Bravo Company of the Army's 60th Infantry Battalion.

Duterte brought the corporal to the headquarters of the Eastern Mindanao Command in Camp Panacan. Rosales was then brought to the Panacan Military Hospital

The report quoted Duterte as saying no ransom was paid for Rosales' release.

The NPA claimed to have taken Rosalesas a so-called prisoner of war (POW) in Kapalong, Davao del Norte last May 3.

NPA Comval-North Davao-South Agusan Sub-region Sub-regional Command spokesperson Aris Francisco said the supposed arrest of Rosales was part of the NPA's total log ban campaign.

Francisco accused Rosales of "coddling and protecting massive logging in Agusan del Sur, Compostela Valley and Davao del Norte provinces."

"[Rosales] was on the process of arranging for the transit of logs when apprehended by the NPA. A sachet of shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) was also found in his possession, proof that soldiers who are coddling big loggers in the province were also into the illegal drug trade," Francisco added.
