Mayor Furigay convenes peace council over Abu Sayyaf threats

From the Zamboanga Today (May 19): Mayor Furigay convenes peace council over Abu Sayyaf threats

Lamitan City Mayor Rose Furigay and Vice Mayor Roderick Furigay last week convened the Peace and Order Council to tackle threats posed by terrorist groups particularly the dreaded Abu Sayyaf and the Urban Terrorist Group (UTG).

The emergency meeting presided by the mayor and vice mayor was conducted at the Lamitan Plaza and attended by the military, police and 45 barangay chairmen of the various communities.

The group tackled the menace posed by the Abu Sayyaf who were responsible in the planting of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) last Sunday in Sitio Lagasan barangay Kulay Bato.

Mayor Furigay commended the police, military and the intelligence community for the early discovery of the IED which could have injured or even killed many people if the bomb exploded.

The mayor urged the barangay leaders to be alert and vigilant in the face of threats by the terrorist group who are out to create confusion among the people.

Furigay asked the police and military to seize and secure the other explosives which are allegedly still out in the custody of the ASG.

Based on intelligence there are still eight IED that managed to enter the city.

At the same time, the barangay chairmen asked the military and police to field more personnel and add more checkpoints in entry and exit points of the city.
