New People's Army (NPA) rebels ambushed soldiers on their way back to camp after assisting the Department of Education in the Brigada Eskuwela 2014 activity in Cawayan Elementary School in Libmanan, Camarines Sur on Thursday.

Members of the Bravo Company of the 42nd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army were on their way back to camp when ambushed around 11:16 a.m. Thursday.

The soldiers were able to engaged the rebels in a brief firefight, forcing the rebels to withdraw towards Barangay Magsaysay, a mountainous village.

The soldiers had just come from Barangay Cawayan where they participated in Brigada Eskwela 2014 being undertaken by parents, teachers and students of the school in preparation for the opening of classes when the incident happened.

No casualty was reported on the government side as they immediately returned the rebels’ volley of fire but the soldiers believed that some rebels were wounded as evidenced by traces of blood in the ambush scene.

Army and police authorities have reminded their men to be always on the alert in view of intelligence reports that NPA dissidents are planning to attack local police offices.
