At least five rebels were killed and two others were captured by soldiers conducting combat operations in Sitio Hukdong, Barangay Balukawe, Matnog, Sorsogon on Thursday.

The soldiers encountered the group of 30 suspected members of the New People’s Army (NPA) and engaged them in a firefight lasting several hours.

Several high-powered firearms were recovered.

Brig. Gen. Joselito Kakilala, commander of the 903rd Infantry Brigade, said the clash started at around 5:44 a.m. involving elements of the 31st Infantry Battalion and the NPA’s Provincial Yunit Guerilya.

"Our soldiers recovered the bodies of five dead rebels and captured two others. Our side suffered no casualty,” Kakilala said, adding that the recovered firearms include two M14 rifles and two MI1 rifles and an M203 grenade launcher.

Kakilala identified the slain rebels as a certain alias Randy, alleged leader of the rebel band; Sonny Pajarillo alias Nick, second in command; a certain alias Ryan, medical staff; alias Butchokoy, security aide; and Elias Garduque alias Yoyong, security aide.

"The captured rebels are Maricel Remon alias Russel, political officer, and Intia Garduque,” Kakilala said.
