From Malaya (Oct 22): Aussie sailors join Pinoys in exercises

TRAINING exercises aimed at improving counter-terrorism efforts and security relations between Filipino and Australian sailors are set to start today off Manila Bay. The five-day maritime training activity dubbed “Lumbas 2012” will formally open aboard an Australian frigate, HMAS Sydney which is docked at the South Harbor, said Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Omar Tonsay. “It is focused on anti-terrorism, human and drug trafficking, and humanitarian assistance and disaster response, involving the Philippine Navy and Australian Border Protection Command,” he said. Apart from the HMAS Sydney, 200 Australian Navy personnel will be involved in the exercise. On the Philippine Navy side, the BRP Mariano Alvarez and BRP Bienvenido Salping, along with 200 personnel, are participating. And as in the previous exercises, this year’s will be joined by the Philippine Coast Guard, the PNP Maritime Group, Bureau of Immigration, National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources....
