Soldiers encounter local terrorists in Basilan

Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City – April 3, 2022

An armed confrontation ensued between operating troops of the Joint Task Force Basilan and the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) under Pasil Bayali on Saturday morning, April 2, 2022.

Brig. Gen. Domingo Gobway, Commander of JTF Basilan said troops were conducting combat operations when they encountered more or less nine ASG members in Barangay Sucaten, Sumisip, Basilan at 7:31 in the morning. The violent extremists withdrew shortly after the engagement but responding government forces caught up with them while they were fleeing which led to another armed confrontation.

Based on reports, the armed confrontations resulted in an undetermined number of casualties on the enemy side and the recovery of war materials including three M16A1 rifles, 20 long magazines, five short magazines, three bandoleers, and 619 rounds of M16 ammunition. On the other hand, four soldiers were wounded in the firefight. Battle casualties were immediately extricated from the area and were given proper medication. They are all in stable condition as of press time.

Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario, Jr., Commander of Western Mindanao Command commended Joint Task Force Basilan for their selfless service and untiring dedication to their sworn duty. The commander assured that the wounded soldiers will be given due medical treatment for their speedy recovery.

“The remaining members of the terror group who refuse to return to the fold of the law are doing desperate moves to gain popular support after they’ve lost it due to the neutralization of their top leader Radzmil Jannatul, a.k.a. Khubayb, who was killed during an encounter with army troops last March 26,” Lt. Gen. Rosario, Jr. further stated.

The military continues to intensify the conduct of combat and non-combat operations to end terrorism in Mindanao.

WESTMINCOM: 2 Former Violent Extremists Denounce Terror Group Deception in Sulu

Posted to the Western Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM) Facebook Page (Apr 6, 2022): 2 Former Violent Extremists Denounce Terror Group Deception in Sulu

Camp Navarro, Calarian, Zamboanga City – April 6, 2022

Two former Abu Sayyaf Group members denounced the group’s deception as they handed over their firearms to the military in Sulu on April 5, 2022.

According to Maj. Gen. Ignatius Patrimonio, Commander of Joint Task Force Sulu, the surrender of the ASG members was an offshoot of the active collaboration between the military and the police. He identified the surrendered personalities as a.k.a. Udar, 42 years old, a resident of Panamao, and a follower of Senior Leader Radullan Sahiron, and a.k.a. Al, 42 years old, a resident Luuk, and a follower of sub-leader Idang Susukan and the late sub-leader Alhabsy Misaya.

“Despaired by the terrorist group’s deception, the two decided to end their armed struggle and return to the folds of the law,” Maj. Gen. Patrimonio said.

The surrendered personalities handed over one Elisco M16A1 rifle, one US cal. 30 M1 Garand rifle, one Colt 1911 Cal. 45 pistol with magazine loaded with five live ammunition, three long and two short magazines of M16A1 rifle loaded with 41 rounds of 5.56mm live ammunition, five rounds of M203 live ammunition, and one black bandolier to the troops of the 4th Marine Brigade in Barangay Tandu Bato, Luuk, Sulu.

The duo revealed that they are tired of evading the government forces and victimizing innocent civilians. They also fear being killed due to the ASG'S weakened capability and the intensified operations of the military in the province.

Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario, Jr., Commander of Western Mindanao Command said that “the success of the AFP’s campaign against terrorism is attributable to the synergy among security forces (AFP , PNP, and the intelligence units) coupled with the unwavering support of the local government units, peace partners, the religious leaders and the locals.” He also urged the remaining ASG members to come out amid the gradual loss of mass support of the ASG propelled by the combat and non-combat operations of the armed forces.

Kalinaw News: 3 NPAs surrender in Davao del Norte

Posted to Kalinaw News (Apr 6, 2022): 3 NPAs surrender in Davao del Norte

Asuncion, DDN – Another 3 members of the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) operating in the boundaries of Davao de Oro-Agusan del Sur-Davao del Norte yielded two (2) high-powered firearms, assorted medical paraphernalia, and war materials to Philippine Army’s 1001st Infantry Brigade (1001st Bde) through the 60th Infantry (Mediator) Battalion (60IB) on April 5, 2022 (Tuesday) at Sitio Bagtok, Brgy. Gupitan, Kapalong, Davao del Norte.

Lt. Col. Merrill Sumalinog, Acting Commanding Officer of 60IB facilitated the surrender of the three identified CNTs known as Alyas Bernon/Dose (Squad Leader), Alyas Gorio (Element), and Alyas Yanyan (Element), all of Guerrilla Front 3 (GF 3), Sub- Regional Committee 4 (SRC 4), Southern Mindanao Regional Command (SMRC). They brought with them two (2) M16 Rifles. They are all listed in the Pedioric Status Report (PSR) -a watchlist of the members of the NPA maintained by Army units.

Upon interview with the Former Rebels (FRs), it was found out that hardships due to lack of supplies and support from the masses forced them to surrender. Further, the surrender of their leaders and comrades added pressure to their decisions.

“We have no other means to survive since we cannot facilitate our survival needs from our former masses anymore. Also, our leaders have already surrendered before us which is why we have nowhere to run and seek guidance. We decided to surrender to 60IB because we have heard of the humane treatment of the soldiers to our former comrades who already surrendered, they have been helping them with all of their needs including legal requirements and helped us to connect with our families and loved ones. On top of that, we surrendered because this is our only chance to live and see our relatives again,” Bernon said.

It can be recalled that 13 members of the same NPA unit led by its Commanding Officer, alias SM, surrendered on February 26 and another four (4) led by Alyas Datu Makatindog/MC (Front Secretary – Highest in Command) also of the same NPA unit surrendered on March 31, all to 60IB.

“We are seeing the end of Guerilla Front 3 and SRC 4 as well and I am glad to inform you that this happened without a single bullet shot against the enemy. This all happened through persistent negotiations backed by the people of the community through their strengthened Integrated Territorial Defense System. With that, the community-especially the Indigenous Peoples- can now confidently live their peaceful lives far from the atrocities, violence, and exploitation they experienced in the arms of the communist terrorists,” Lt. Col. Sumalinog said.

The three (3) surrenderees will be brought to Kapalong District Hospital for medical check-up. They are currently undergoing documentation and processing to Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP) – a government intervention specifically designed for the former members of the NPA who surrendered and returned to the folds of the Law- for Immediate and Livelihood Assistance and cash remuneration for surrendered firearms.

As of reporting date, 60IB is relentless in its efforts to rescue the only four (4) remaining members of the NPA’s Guerrilla Front 3 in order to totally dismantle and ultimately put an end to insurgency in this part of the region.

Lorenzana in the sunrise ceremony and wreath-laying rites at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Libingan ng mga Bayani to open the week-long commemoration of Veteran’s Week anchored on the theme “Kagitingan ng mga Bayani, Inspirasyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino.”

“We remember our fallen heroes whose remains rest on these hallowed grounds. May their unrivaled dedication and love for our people and nation remain ingrained in our hearts and minds,” Maj Gen. Doyaoen said. “To our veterans, your resolute devotion in serving our country will continue to live within our modern-day heroes and the succeeding Filipino generations as we maintain the hard-earned peace and freedom of our nation,” he remarked.

The sunrise ceremony is a tradition where Filipino veterans gather and offer flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to honor their fallen brothers-in-arms. Meanwhile, the wreath-laying ceremony is an institutional way of venerating the memory of Filipino patriots and martyrs who died for the country.

On April 7, Acting DENR Sec. Jim O. Sampulna will spearhead the “Tribute to All Filipino Heroes” in the historic Corregidor Island where Filipino and American troops made their last stand against Japanese invaders after the Fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte will be the guest of honor and speaker at the 80th Araw ng Kagitingan commemoration at the Dambana ng Kagitingan Shrine in Mount Samat, Pilar, Bataan. The president, along with the American and Japanese ambassadors, will offer their respective wreaths at the Dambana ng Kagitingan. Members of the diplomatic corps, foreign dignitaries, high-ranking government officials, and surviving war veterans are expected to attend and witness the activity.

The Dambana ng Kagitingan event will be held simultaneously with the “Paggunita sa Capas” which will be led by Tarlac Gov. Susan A. Yap at the Capas Shrine, the site of the Camp O’Donnell concentration camp where thousands of Filipino and American soldiers who were part of “Death March” perished.

Pasig Rep. Roman T. Romulo will lead the sunset ceremony which will cap-off the week-long Veterans’ Week commemoration on April 11, 2022.

Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista – April 4, 2022

The Talipao Municipal Task Force in Ending Local Armed Confict (MTF-ELAC), in partnership with the 2nd Special Forces Battalion of the Joint Task Force (JTF) Sulu, spearheaded the construction of water tanks for the families and communities of the former Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members in Sitio Banglot, Barangay Sinumaan, Talipao, Sulu, on March 23, 2022.

In a statement, 2nd Special Forces Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Benito Ramos said that “the constructions of the 10,000 liters capacity water tanks were made possible through the unending support of the Talipao MTF ELAC under the chairmanship of Honorable Mayor Nivocadniezar Tulawie.”

“The water tanks are symbols of peace, unity, and solidarity. Your security forces, together with the former ASG members, were the ones who constructed these water tanks for their community that were destroyed and ruined by ASG terrorism. We are now united in rebuilding the community in order to normalize the lives of the former ASG and their families,” added by Lt. Col. Ramos.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Ignatius Patrimonio lauded the dedication and commitment of the 2nd SF Battalion of their efforts and contributions in ending the local armed conflict in their area of responsibilities. He also extended his sincere appreciation and recognition to the Talipao MTF ELAC of their support to the peace, security, and development campaign of the JTF Sulu.

“I commend the troops of the 2nd SFBn of your efforts in constructing the water tanks for the community. Your feat is a manifestation of your professionalism and firm resolve of bringing lasting peace in the community. I therefore urge you to help the former ASG to live their normal lives as we continue to neutralize the remaining ASG bandits who continue to sow terror in the peaceful communities,” said Maj. Gen. Patrimonio.

Maj. Gen. Patrimonio added saying “On behalf of the security forces in Sulu, I thank the Talipao MTF ELAC of your relentless effort and for being our reliable partners in our quest for lasting peace and sustainable development in the Province of Sulu. Let us help the former ASG members live normally and start anew.”

“To those ASG bandits who still continue to sow terror in the peaceful communities, now is the time for you to surrender, go back to the folds of the law, and live peacefully. The JTF Sulu will be relentless on our campaign to end terrorism and bring lasting peace in Sulu,” Maj. Gen. Patrimonio ended.
