Despite his looming retirement from the military on Oct. 26, AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Eduardo Año remains committed in clearing Marawi City of the Maute Group remnants and protecting the nation from other lawless elements.
"The AFP chief remains focused on the ongoing operations. Not only in Marawi, in Sulu, or Basilan; but also in other parts of the country where operations are ongoing to protect the people from enemies of peace, security, and development like the terrorist NPA (New People's Army)," AFP public affairs office chief Col. Edgard Arevalo said late Sunday.
Military officials are required to retire upon reaching the age of 56.
He added Año's undivided attention is on the AFP's support to recovery and rehabilitation efforts of government in Marawi City once the fighting is over.
This initiative is in connection with efforts of other agencies of government, local governments.
Arevalo said part of the AFP effort is ensuring that there will be no spillover of the rebellion from Marawi to other parts of the country.
Año, a member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1983, earlier said that he has recommended a minimum of three ranking military officials to replace him.
But it is up to President Rodrigo Duterte to decide who will be the next AFP Chief of Staff, he added.

Father Teresito "Chito" Soganub, the Catholic priest recently rescued from the clutches of the Maute Group terrorists, held a thankgiving mass at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) headquarters, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City Sunday.
Around 40 military and civilian personnel attended the mass, said Joint Task Force Ranao deputy commander Col. Romeo Brawner.
"It was a great celebration of life for Father Chito whose personal safety was placed in danger because of the fierce gun battle that is happening in Marawi City. According to Father Chito, the mass was also a thanksgiving for the lives of those who were rescued," he added.
Soganub was held hostage by the terrorists from May 23 up to his rescue last Sept. 16.
To date, a total of 1,730 people have been rescued by the government forces and other government agencies since fighting began after a foiled attempt to arrest Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon and his cohorts.
"Father Chito is praying that he will be able to hear mass again at the St. Mary's Cathedral in Marawi City once the firefight is over and the area is cleared of improvised explosive devices that were laid by the terrorists," Brawner said.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa ordered stricter enforcement of applicable laws and regulations to curb the illegal and unauthorized sales of police uniforms and other related accessories.
In a memorandum circular released this month, he ordered all PNP offices and units to implement stricter measures on the regulation and control of the use, manufacture, sale, and distribution of police owned industrial designs of uniforms and accoutrements.
The new order reinforces the courses of action that will guide the Task Force "Bantay-Bihis" and other PNP units in implementing it, Dela Rosa stressed.
It also pointed out that some PNP uniforms with patches and seals are being used by some criminals and other civilians to usurp authority for their illegal activities.
In 2000, Executive Order (EO) No. 297 prohibited the unauthorized manufacture, sale, distribution and use of uniforms, insignias, and other accoutrements of the PNP.
EO 297 reinforced Article 179 of the Revised Penal Code (RA 3815) which penalizes "any person who shall publicly and improperly make use of insignia, uniforms or dress pertaining to an office not held by such person or to a class or persons of which he or she is not a member.”
It also orders the "immediate closure of the establishment, plant or office where the uniforms and other items are illegally manufactured, stored, sold or distributed."
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Research and Development (DRD) said most of the PNP uniforms and accoutrements are already registered with Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to safeguard the ownership of the PNP on its patented designs.
DRD head, Director Efren M. Perez, said the registration is an effective measure to stop the illegal production of substandard and unauthorized uniforms by illegal manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, and sellers which is prohibited under Republic Act 8293 otherwise known as the "Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines".
He added that the PNP has accredited persons and entities through Dayspring Consolidated, Inc. to manufacture, sell, and distribute PNP uniforms and accoutrements given the rights and privileges as authorized and exclusive distributors.

The government has so far released PHP3.35 billion to help internally displaced persons (IDPs) affected by the fighting in Lanao del Sur, an official of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) said Monday, September 25.
OCD Assistant Secretary Kristoffer James Purisima said the money, released through the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), funded the provision of relief assistance and cash-for-work program.
"Relief assistance includes family food packs, kitchen kits, hygiene kits, sleeping kits, and drinking water kits. Various sectors continue to help the IDPs through relief operations and medical assistance," Purisima said during the regular Mindanao Hour press briefing in Malacañan.
According to Purisima, Caritas Internationalis, in coordination with the Iligan City Social Welfare and Development office, donated food packs, kitchenwares and hygiene kits to 3,000 families last Saturday.
Maranao medical students from Mindanao State University (MSU) joined the group to provide medical assistance to the IDPs, he added.
Purisima also reported that the National Housing Authority will propose for the construction of four low-rise buildings in Marawi City with 60 condo-type units per building.
"It will be constructed at the same time as the permanent shelters and this housing option aims to assist Marawi City Hall employees, teachers, and other employees and will be offered at an affordable price," the official said.
Task Force Bangon Marawi Executive Director Undersecretary Cesar Yano issued a directive last September 21 to expedite the completion of the transitional shelter site.
The post-conflict needs assessment (PCNA) is also ongoing in the outlying areas of Marawi City and other affected localities, according to Purisima.
A Bangon Marawi Youth Leadership Camp, organized by the provincial government of Lanao del Sur and other concerned agencies, is being held in MSU where around 80 youth leaders from the evacuation centers in Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, and Iligan City have signed up.
The youth camp focuses on environmental leadership, peace education and community-building activities. Also during the same press briefing, Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is working with Vietnamese authorities regarding a sea incident in Pangasinan.
"Authorities are now conducting a fair and thorough investigation into the incident involving a Philippine Navy vessel and Vietnamese fishing boats which were seen fishing 34 nautical miles off Cape Bolinao in Pangasinan well within our exclusive economic zone," Abella said.
"The DFA is closely coordinating with the officials of the Vietnamese Embassy in Manila on the developments after the incident particularly to facilitate access to five other Vietnamese fishermen taken into custody by the Philippine Navy," he added.
Abella also commented on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) recommendations on how the Philippines protects the rights of the people.
"The Philippines has committed to fully accept 103 out of the 257 recommendations that we received during the Third Philippine Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva, a careful review and inclusive consultation with inputs from various stakeholders, especially from representatives from the State’s executive, legislative, and judicial departments was done, and in line with our independent foreign policy," he said.
The Palace spokesman also made an assurance that there are contingencies made by the government as a response to the two-day transport strike in Metro Manila.
He said the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has deployed vehicles offering free rides to affected commuters. "More will be deployed based on necessity," he added.

An inter-agency investigation is now underway to determine circumstances on the incident involving the BRP Miguel Malvar (PS-19) and a poaching Vietnamese fishing vessel which left two Vietnamese crewmen dead last Sept. 23.
The encounter between the Filipino patrol craft and Vietnamese ship took place around 1 a.m., 34 nautical miles off Bolinao, Pangasinan, AFP public affairs Col. Edgard Arevalo said Monday.
"There is an ongoing inquiry by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP), Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Philippine Navy (PN) on the circumstances surrounding the incident," he added.
Arevalo said the PN is making its personnel available on-call for the inquiry to shed light on the incident.
"We have submitted the incident report to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) who will also be furnished updates and results of the investigation. We may have to direct further queries and issuances to the DFA," he added.
Initial reports reaching AFP headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City indicated that two Vietnamese fishermen were found dead in their vessel during the visit, board, search and seizure (VBSS) procedure done by PN personnel on the Vietnamese ship.
Before the VBSS, the Navy ship gave chase to the said fishing vessel that was spotted, along with five other fishing vessels, to be illegally fishing near Bolinao, Pangasinan.

A MEMBER of Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu) was killed when the New People’s Army (NPA) mounted an attack on a detachment in Arakan, North Cotabato last week.
In a statement of 10th Infantry Agila Division, the slain Cafgu member was identified as Joel Batawan.
The attack also wounded Jonathan Lasoy, also part of the Cafgu Active Auxillaries of Salasang detachment in Barangay Sto. Niño, Arakan, North Cotabato.
Both Batawan and Lasoy were on their way home when the NPAs hit them.
The troops of 39th Infantry Battalion and police in Arakan immediately conducted pursuit operation. They were able to recover the bodies of two NPA members on Sept. 22, and brought them to Alojado Funeral Homes.
“Recovered from the possession of the two cadavers were a back pack containing BDA uniform, subversive documents and live ammunition of cal. 45 pistol,” cited the statement of the 10th Infantry Division.
Col. Roberto Ancan, 1002nd Infantry Brigade commander, in a statement urged the remaining NPA rebels to return to the folds of the law. “We believe that the lowly members of the NPA are being used to commit crimes and sow terror to the people by their communist leaders,” he added.

The New Peoples’ Army (NPA) in Southern Mindanao recently released a video footage of a police officer who was abducted last month in a barangay here.
The NPA abducted Police Officer 1 Bristol Catalan, a member of the police in Makilala, North Cotabato last Aug. 16 in Purok 4, Barangay Katipunan, Kidapawan.
The NPA’s Mount Apo Sub-Regional Command of the Merardo Arce Command uploaded on YouTube the video of Catalan whom it considered a “prisoner-of-war”.
It said the video proves that the captive is still alive.
In the video, Catalan assured his family that he was being treated well by the rebels.
“Ever since I have not seen a Red fighter… That’s why (when I was caught) I thought they would ill-treat me. But what I found out, it’s far from the truth. I did not receive even a single flick. They treated me well,” he said during one of his conversations with the guerrillas.
He appealed to the local government units of Makilala and Kidapawan City to facilitate his speedy release as he called on the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police to halt their operations.
Catalan’s video was uploaded after the release of another NPA captive, SPO2 George Rupinta, on September 15.
On August 16, Catalan was driving a motorcycle to the city proper with his two children when six men who identified themselves as NPA rebels flagged him down in Katipunan.
The rebels seized his service 9mm pistol.
Nothing had been heard about Catalan since.
Bishop Colin Bagaforo of the Diocese of Kidapawan has issued several appeals for Catalan’s release.
Rigoberto Sanchez, spokesperson of the Regional Operations Command of the NPA in Southern Mindanao, said the intensified operations of the AFP and the PNP have hampered Catalan’s release.
“The NPA ensures the welfare of POW Catalan in the midst of these offensives but ultimately futile operations. Negotiations with regard to his possible release are being sabotaged by these operations,” said Sanchez.
Catalan’s wife Gigi expressed appreciation toward the NPA’s gesture to show them ‘proof’ that her husband is still alive.
“I have sought many times from the group to show us proof that my husband is OK while in captivity. We were glad we saw his face through the YouTube,” said Gigi.
She again appealed to the NPA to release her husband as they only rely on him for their daily needs.
“To meet our needs, I worked as rubber tapper. I made it sure my children can go to school. Also, I received help from friends and from LGUs. But we want my husband to be with us,” she said.

The New Peoples’ Army (NPA) in Southern Mindanao recently released a video footage of a police officer who was abducted last month in a barangay here.
The NPA abducted Police Officer 1 Bristol Catalan, a member of the police in Makilala, North Cotabato last Aug. 16 in Purok 4, Barangay Katipunan, Kidapawan.
The NPA’s Mount Apo Sub-Regional Command of the Merardo Arce Command uploaded on YouTube the video of Catalan whom it considered a “prisoner-of-war”.
It said the video proves that the captive is still alive.
In the video, Catalan assured his family that he was being treated well by the rebels.
“Ever since I have not seen a Red fighter… That’s why (when I was caught) I thought they would ill-treat me. But what I found out, it’s far from the truth. I did not receive even a single flick. They treated me well,” he said during one of his conversations with the guerrillas.
He appealed to the local government units of Makilala and Kidapawan City to facilitate his speedy release as he called on the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police to halt their operations.
Catalan’s video was uploaded after the release of another NPA captive, SPO2 George Rupinta, on September 15.
On August 16, Catalan was driving a motorcycle to the city proper with his two children when six men who identified themselves as NPA rebels flagged him down in Katipunan.
The rebels seized his service 9mm pistol.
Nothing had been heard about Catalan since.
Bishop Colin Bagaforo of the Diocese of Kidapawan has issued several appeals for Catalan’s release.
Rigoberto Sanchez, spokesperson of the Regional Operations Command of the NPA in Southern Mindanao, said the intensified operations of the AFP and the PNP have hampered Catalan’s release.
“The NPA ensures the welfare of POW Catalan in the midst of these offensives but ultimately futile operations. Negotiations with regard to his possible release are being sabotaged by these operations,” said Sanchez.
Catalan’s wife Gigi expressed appreciation toward the NPA’s gesture to show them ‘proof’ that her husband is still alive.
“I have sought many times from the group to show us proof that my husband is OK while in captivity. We were glad we saw his face through the YouTube,” said Gigi.
She again appealed to the NPA to release her husband as they only rely on him for their daily needs.
“To meet our needs, I worked as rubber tapper. I made it sure my children can go to school. Also, I received help from friends and from LGUs. But we want my husband to be with us,” she said.

Security forces captured 2 Abu Sayyaf militants who were sent to bomb civilian targets in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, officials announced Sunday evening.
Officials said the duo, Omar Askali and Mukaram Sapie, were captured in separate operations on Saturday in Zamboanga City. Askali was tracked down by soldiers and policemen along Governor Lim Avenue in downtown Zamboanga and Sapie in the village of aluksangay.
“Government forces thwarted Abu Sayyaf members under top leader Furuji Indama from bombing the city of Zamboanga,” said Army Captain Jo-ann Petinglay, a spokeswoman for the Western Mindanao Command.
She said security forces seized a fragmentation grenade and two identification cards, including a cell phone from Askali, a bomb-maker and a trusted aide of Indama who is tagged by authorities as behind the spate of terror attacks and killings in nearby Basilan, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region.
An improvised explosive and a .45-caliber pistol were also confiscated from Sapie in Taluksangay, Petinglay said, adding, soldiers were still searching for a second bomb in the village. “The area is still being searched for another IED since information from Askali revealed that Mukram was keeping two improvised explosive devices,” she said.
Army Colonel Leonel Nicolas, commander of an anti-terror task force in Zamboanga City, said: “Intelligence reports revealed that the group will bomb public places in the city three days from now. This prompted our troops to conduct a joint operation with the police to capture the bandits and preempt their bomb ploy.”
Zamboanga, which was targeted in the past by Abu Sayyaf bombers, is celebrating an annual Catholic feast in October.

Terrorism expert Rohan Gunaratna criticized the Philippine government Friday, September 22, for failing to read signs of the "build-up" of the terrorist Islamic State (ISIS) in the Philippines, leading to the siege of Marawi City.
"The Philippines failed to detect, to read, the indicators, the signs, and the clues that led to Marawi. We have to acknowledge that," Gunaratna said on Friday.
"If governments do not understand to read the indicators, then another Marawi is inevitable in this region," he also said.
Gunaratna was speaking at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Conference on Peace and the Prevention of Violent Extremism in Southeast Asia at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.
The expert was referring to the May 23 siege of Marawi by the terrorist Maute Group, which is linked to ISIS. (READ: Terror in Mindanao: The Mautes of Marawi)
The Marawi siege triggered clashes with the Philippine military, and prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to put Mindanao under martial law.
The Marawi clashes have killed at least 147 government forces, 45 civilians, and 660 terrorists. The crisis has also forced more than 600,000 Filipinos out of their homes.
'Not an intelligence failure'
In a speech, Gunaratna pointed out that the Marawi siege "is not an intelligence failure," but "an operational failure."
"It is a failure of government to act based on sound and timely intelligence," he said.
He explained that before the Marawi siege, the Philippine intelligence community had already produced 4 reports on the "build-up" in Marawi. The latest of these reports was published on April 14.
"So you can see that as we look at the expansion of IS in the Southeast Asian region, for governments, it is very important to read the signs, indicators, and clues of the build-up of groups in certain cities," he said, referring to ISIS by its other acronym, IS.
He added that the expertise of ISIS "is distinct" from that of terror groups Al-Qaeda, Taliban, and Jemaah Islamiyah, "which was largely fighting in the rural areas."
In contrast, he said, "if you look at IS, it was always moving from the desert to the cities," such as Mosul and Raqqa.
Gunaratna also said that "IS central advised those groups that occupied Marawi on how to conduct the battle in Marawi."
He cited advice from "IS central" on May 24, just a day after the Marawi siege. This was for the Maute Group to "quickly get a drone up," as the Armed Forces of the Philippines approached Marawi. "So you can see the guidance."
Duterte and previous leaders
At the same time, Gunaratna noted that President Rodrigo Duterte "acknowledged that IS is operating in the Philippines." (READ: Duterte says martial law due to ISIS threat)
"Unfortunately, the previous leaders, the previous bureaucrats, said there's no IS in the Philippines. So I think that the President understood that to fight IS, he needed to identify them," Gunaratna said. (READ: Admit ISIS presence in Philippines, analyst says)
"Identifying the problem itself is 50% of the solution," he said.
Former Philippine president Fidel V Ramos, who was in Friday's event, also gave his own "very sound advice" on the Marawi crisis.
"The Marawi uprising could have been prevented if only there was more of what we call in ASEAN 'musyawarah-mufakat.' What is that? Musyawarah means consultation. Mufakat means consensus," he said.
Consultation, he said, can be done through the government mechanism called Legislatic-Executive Development Advisory Council (Ledac).

Ramos, who endorsed Duterte for president, said "consultation" has taken a different form under the former Davao City mayor.

The war marks its 4th month on Saturday, September 23. At least 887 have died including 151 soldiers, 689 enemies, and 47 civilians.
The Philippine military is poised to control all critical bridges in the battle area in Marawi City, as it begins to occupy buildings located past the eastern mouth of Masiu Bridge in the lakeside village Raya Madaya.
The marines have hoisted the Philippine flag on one of the buildings around the corner of Agus River and Lake Lanao, based on images that circulated on Friday, September 22.
This means troops now occupy both ends of Masiu Bridge. It was a combination of ground assault and air strikes, according to a source on the ground.
Fighting continues in the area, and the bridge remains unpassable due to enemy snipers who still have a clear view of the bridge. The local terror groups have rocket-propelled grenades that can pierce through the military's armor vehicles. (READ: Terror in Mindanao: The Mautes of Marawi)
It's a sign that enemy space has significantly shrunk since clashes erupted on May 23. Ground troops have contained them on land while the navy and the maritime police swarm the lake to make sure enemies don't use it as exit point.

Locals often refer to the bridge "Raya Madaya Bridge" because it goes right into the lakeside village from the highway.
For months the 3 bridges on Agus River – Baloi Bridge, Bayabao Bridge, and Masiu Bridge – separated the battle area from the military-controlled "safe-zone."
Troops regained control of Baloi Bridge on July 20 and Bayabao Bridge on September 1.
Deeper in the battle area, troops are also gaining ground. Task Group deputy commander Colonel Romeo Brawner said they continue to advance in the area of Bato Mosque, where hostages were previously kept.
High-profile hostage Father Chito Soganub, a Catholic priest, was able to escape last week when troops pushed to control the mosque.
Brawner said the fighting is now in tighter areas, making it more difficult to advance. It gets harder to soften the ground with air strikes because troops are too close to the enemies.
The military said it is still dealing with about 50 fighters who are holding up to 60 hostages.
Brawner said the enemies are taking advantage of the ratholes and trenches they dug inside the battle, allowing them to escape military bombardment.

Duterte made these remarks after thousands of Filipinos, including leftists, mounted protests in different parts of the country on Thursday, September 21, to mark the declaration of Martial Law 45 years ago.
At Mendiola was an effigy, which mimicked the 3-D combination puzzle Rubik's Cube, showing the face of the President, which could be matched with the images of Marcos, German dictator Adolf Hitler, and a puppet.
They claim that Duterte is no different from Marcos who seems to be bent on "marching towards the path of dictatorship."
Responding to them, the President said he has never had any problem with the Left, "pero sumosobra ang mga gago eh (but the fools have gone too far)."

Black-clad armed men are feared massing up in towns near Butig in Lanao del Sur, hometown of the leaders of the Maute Group that attacked nearby Marawi City.
In the town of Bayang, Mayor Aslani Pangarungan Balt said an M203 grenade was fired toward the military detachment Wednesday afternoon, September 20, by a group of about 20 armed men.
"May lumusob na unidentified black group doon sa upper portion ng bayan ko. Inaano nila ang kampo doon ng military. May pinaputukan sila doon. Fortunately, nawala ang mga tao (An unidentified black group attacked our town. The target was the military camp there. Fortunately, they withdrew)," Balt said in an interview in Marawi City after a meeting with the military.
The military confirmed there was a one-minute encounter in Bayang, but its investigation shows only 5 to 7 armed men were involved.
Task Group Ranao deputy commander Colonel Romeo Brawner said they are taking the situation "seriously," even as they see it as a "nuisance harassment."
"The town of Bayang was harassed by a few armed men. Our assessment here is that they were just an ordinary group. It's a nuisance harassment," Brawner said in a mix of English and Filipino.
Brawner said the 65th Infantry Battalion in Bayang is on top of the situation. He also gave assurances that the armed group will find it difficult to move toward Marawi if their plan is to reinforce local terror groups fighting the military.
The armed men immediately withdrew out of the town on Wednesday but they were spotted again Saturday morning, September 23, causing panic among residents.
Balt said the municipal government has instructed the residents not evacuate, but also prepared contingencies. He said they should go to the municipal hall if the situation escalates.
Brawner said they are looking at the possibility that it is a "diversionary tactic" to move military attention from Marawi.
Bayang is a mountainous lakeside town similar to the terrain in Butig, where the Maute Group also attacked a military detachment in February 2016.
Butig is about 50 kilometers away from Marawi City, where clashes with the Maute Group and the Abu Sayyaf Group has raged on 4 months since it erupted on May 23.
Balat said he has also deployed barangay security personnel to protect his town.
"I called my spiritual leaders and my village captains. We have to defend our territory," Balt said.

Black-clad armed men are feared massing up in towns near Butig in Lanao del Sur, hometown of the leaders of the Maute Group that attacked nearby Marawi City.
In the town of Bayang, Mayor Aslani Pangarungan Balt said an M203 grenade was fired toward the military detachment Wednesday afternoon, September 20, by a group of about 20 armed men.
"May lumusob na unidentified black group doon sa upper portion ng bayan ko. Inaano nila ang kampo doon ng military. May pinaputukan sila doon. Fortunately, nawala ang mga tao (An unidentified black group attacked our town. The target was the military camp there. Fortunately, they withdrew)," Balt said in an interview in Marawi City after a meeting with the military.
The military confirmed there was a one-minute encounter in Bayang, but its investigation shows only 5 to 7 armed men were involved.
Task Group Ranao deputy commander Colonel Romeo Brawner said they are taking the situation "seriously," even as they see it as a "nuisance harassment."
"The town of Bayang was harassed by a few armed men. Our assessment here is that they were just an ordinary group. It's a nuisance harassment," Brawner said in a mix of English and Filipino.
Brawner said the 65th Infantry Battalion in Bayang is on top of the situation. He also gave assurances that the armed group will find it difficult to move toward Marawi if their plan is to reinforce local terror groups fighting the military.
The armed men immediately withdrew out of the town on Wednesday but they were spotted again Saturday morning, September 23, causing panic among residents.
Balt said the municipal government has instructed the residents not evacuate, but also prepared contingencies. He said they should go to the municipal hall if the situation escalates.
Brawner said they are looking at the possibility that it is a "diversionary tactic" to move military attention from Marawi.
Bayang is a mountainous lakeside town similar to the terrain in Butig, where the Maute Group also attacked a military detachment in February 2016.
Butig is about 50 kilometers away from Marawi City, where clashes with the Maute Group and the Abu Sayyaf Group has raged on 4 months since it erupted on May 23.
Balat said he has also deployed barangay security personnel to protect his town.
"I called my spiritual leaders and my village captains. We have to defend our territory," Balt said.
The war in Marawi marked its 4th month on Saturday, September 23. At least 887 have died including 151 soldiers, 689 enemies, and 47 civilians.
