SAN ANTONIO, Zambales (DWDD) – The Naval Education and Training Command participated the International Coastal Clean-up 2017 with the theme: “Sama-Sama para sa Malinis na Karagatan” by cleaning our respective area of responsibility.
The Command was able to collect One Hundred Thirteen (113) sacks of assorted trash, and with a total number of One Thousand One Hundred Nineteen (1,119) volunteers/participants last 16 September 2017. NETC/MCAG

CAMP GEN EMILIO AGUINALDO, Quezon City (DWDD) – Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Eduardo M. Año assured scholarships to all dependents of soldiers Killed-in-Action Marawi.
According to Gen Año, aside from the guaranteed scholarships for the children of KIA soldiers, their widows will also benefit through job opportunities on the department of their choice.
At the same time, livelihood programs will be provided dependents who opts to have their own business, since the AFP has P2 million in funds to support the projects, coming from various donors, partners and stakeholders.
Recently, the AFP has honored its stakeholders and partners who has been graciously donating funds, specially for the education of military dependents, through a recognition ceremony held at the AFP Commissioned Officers Club in Camp Gen Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City to recognize the role of individuals and institutions that continuously support the education of our soldiers’ dependents through their partnership with the AFP Educational Benefit System (AFPEBS).
Among those who attended the stakeholders recognition ceremony last September 15, were AFP vice chief of staff Lt. Gen. Salvador Melchor Mison Jr., the acting deputy chief of staff of the AFP Maj. Gen. Elvin Velasco, Brig. Gen. Arnel Duco, AFP J1, officials and staff of 18 partner institutions and the 16 grantees of the AFP Educational Benefit System (AFPEBS).
All of these efforts are in line with the AFPEBSO’s commitment of “Leaving No Soldiers’ Orphan Behind.
On the same occasion, the AFP proudly highlighted the feat of their magna cum laude graduate, five cum laude graduates, and 15 Student Achievement Recognition System (STARS) awardees. CASIGURAN, Aurora (DWDD) – The C.J. Torre Elementary School, Esperanza Elementary School, and Esperanza Daycare Center benefitted from the Joint Civic Assistance Activity of the Philippine and US military forces.
Last September 15, 2017, soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and their counterpart from the 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade broke ground for the engineering and construction projects through renovation of several schools and a day-care center in Casiguran town in Aurora province.

The projects also aims to give the children with a more spacious, modern, and comfortable environment in which to learn and play, including new classrooms, canteens and updating the schools electrical wiring.
Aside the construction activities, US military medical teams taught around 600 Girl Scouts in Casiguran town on basic lifesaving skills, disease prevention and dental hygiene.
All of these activities are part of the US-Philippine Bilateral Military Exercise dubbed “KAMANDAG” which stands for Kaagapay Ng Mga Mandirigma Ng Dagat (Cooperation of Warriors of the Sea)

According to AFP-JTF NCR Commander Col Vic Tomas, the soldiers will form of the AFP – Civil Disturbance Management contingent, together with its K-9 units.
But Col Tomas clarified that the AFP contingent will remain in their barracks unless called upon to assist personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
On the part of the PNP, they have deployed one thousand police personnel all throughout Metro Manila, while augmentation forces from the various police district has been placed on stand-by and ready to respond for any untoward incident.
So far, authorities have not received any report of any terrorist plot to coincide with the protest of different militant groups. AES/ALS

CAMP GENE EMILIO AGUINALDO, Quezon City (DWDD) – The Armed Forces of the Philippines is still verifying reports regarding the emergence of a new group in Mindanao.
According to AFP Public Affairs Chief Marine Col. Edgard Arevalo, they are still investigating the existence of the group called Meranao Victims Movement – supposedly formed to face-off with the Daesh-inspired Maute terrorist group.
Col Arevalo explained that they are still verifying what this group is fighting for. It is possible that could just be a ploy or propaganda by groups out to disrupt the Peace restoration in Marawi.
The AFP is also looking into possible link of MVM with the Maute, Abu Sayyaf, and other terror groups.
Recently, a 14-minute video surfaced in the world wide web showing an armed group who claims to be Maranao evacuees from Marawi City fighting for the rights of the Bangsa Meranaw allegedly neglected because of the continues fighting.
The group also stated that they are against the use of Marawi City as a sanctuary by the Maute terror group that has brought hardship and pain among Meranaw.
The new group has also called on the government to let civilians go back to their homes, in areas already declared cleared by the AFP; to stop the aerial bombardment, and alleged abuses by authorities manning checkpoints, specially on women. AES/ALS

A Mindanews report posted online on September 15 said that Commanders from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Moro National Liberation Front have vowed to help in the government’s campaign against illegal drugs.
Senior Supt. Jonathan Tangonan, Officer-in-charge of the Cotabato Police Provincial Office disclosed that said commanders manifested their support in a covenant signed after a “special meeting” Thursday (September 14) with the local police and the municipal government of Matalam, North Cotabato.
Mayor Gigi Valdevieso-Catamco called for the meeting which was also attended by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA R-12) and the provincial police office.
In an interview over catholic-run DXND, Tangonan said the commanders admitted that they have relatives who are using and selling drugs.
Illegal drugs trade according to Tongonon has disturbed their communities for so long and at times caused ‘rido’ or family feuds among them”. Police records showed Matalam town is considered a “hot spot” of illegal drugs.

A large group of student and youth leaders from various colleges, and universtities of Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat, and Cotabato City gathered in a forum on September 17, 2017 at Cotabato City.
In their manifesto issued at the end of the forum, the twenty six (26) student and youth leaders reiterated their belief and expressed their trust over a peacefully negotiated settlement as the only just, realistic, costless and humane way to solve the age-old Mindanao conflict.
They manifested their strong support to the current peace process between the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which is now on its 20th year.
The student and youth leaders also congratulated the New Bangsamoro Transition Commission (BTC) for having successfully drafted a comprehensive version of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), and for having submitted the original copy of said BBL to the Office of the President.
They also thanked His Excellency President Duterte for the submission of said draft BBL to the House of Representatives, and the Senate counting on His Excellency’s word to certify the same to Congress as urgent bill.
They joined the honorable members of the BTC in the assurance that said version of the BBL has stayed and was made to stick with and within the parameters of GPH-MILF Framework Agreement on the Bangsamoro (FAB) and Comprehensive Agreement on Bangsamoro (CAB) as well as the GPH-MNLF Final Peace Agreement (FPA). It is the new draft enabling law that is likewise in accordance to and compliant with the agreed upon stipulations and provisions of these peace agreements.
In the last part of their manifesto, they strongly appealed and called on the honorable members of the House of Representatives and the Senate to pass it as soon as possible.
They also joined in the popular call of the Bangsamoro to the GPH to implement the CAB and pass the enhanced BBL that reflects the Bangsamoro aspirations ahead of the federalization of the Philippines.

In peace advocacies conducted in the grassroots, the common question that one encounter is regarding the status of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), and if there will be a declaration of war if the government failed to deliver her obligation embodied in the agreement? A simple question but need to answer them in a peaceful mode with sensitivity to appease their weary mind.
We do understand their frustrations considering that our journey to peace is so elusive despite the signing of the Framework Agreement on Bangsamoro (FAB) on October 15, 2012 and the Comprehensive Agreement on Bangsamoro (CAB) on March 27 , 2014, witnessed by the International community.
Former President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III promised to deliver the Bangsamoro Government before the end of his term but was disrupted by the Mamasapano fiasco that in the lens of Moro conspiracy theorist was a deliberate and intentional as to defeat the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law.
The road to peace continues under President Rodrigo R. Duterte with the same issues and agenda but with different personalities and key players in the peace process. He expanded the members of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission from 15 to 21member-commission for purposes of inclusivity.
In the final phase of the drafting of the new BBL, Marawi siege happened and Martial Law was declared in Mindanao. Just the same in the perspective of the Moro conspiracy theorist, it is also deliberate, intentional and a part of a " Grand Plan" to ruin the passion of the Bangsamoro people in their aspiration to have their own Bangsamoro Region.
When asked for his observations, MILF Peace Implementing Panel Chair Mohagher categorically answered with a passionate statement. He said that "Whatever happens, the MILF will abide to all signed agreements with the government and will consistently invoke them to protect and preserve the gains of peace process. "
In Islam, honoring an agreement is a moral obligation. During the time of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) there was a Treaty of Hudaybiyyah wherein there are stipulations that are not acceptable to the Companions of the holy prophet that caused great resentment and fury among the Muslims at that time. But the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised his companions to " fulfill every promise and do what the treaty says." (Sahih Al Bukhari, 3: 50 : 891). " Allah is the Best Planner ".

Ayon sa mga nakasaksi noong Septyembre 16, 2017, habang nagpapahinga ang mga lasing na sundalo sa ilalim ng 3rd Platoon, Alpha Coy, 2nd IBPA sa pamumuno ng isang Banaloyos mula sa dinaluhan nitong family fiesta nang matumba mula sa pagkakasandal ang baril ng isang sundalo na naging sanhi ng pagputok nito. Dahil sa lasing at pagkapahiya sa mga taong nandun ay galit nitong iwinasiwas at pinaputok ang baril sa direksyon ng mga naglalaro ng basketball sa kalapit na plasa.
Dito na tinamaan ang 15 anyos at estudyanteng si Vincent Jaylord Veracis Pequiro na agarang namatay at pagkasugat sa isa pa na si Remark Vergara, 23 anyos.
Isang kasinungalingan din ang sabihin ng mga sundalo na kaya sila nasa baryo ay dahil sa nag aayos sila ng day care center habang ang totoo nito ay dumalo sila sa family reunion ng pamilya Bordaje na kapamilya ng isa nilang kasamahan na si Ondo Bordaje.

Kaisa ng mamamayang Masbateno ang buong rebolusyonaryong kilusan sa rehiyong Bikol sa pagkundena sa dagdag na namang kaso ng paglabag sa karapatang taon ng AFP-PNP-CAFGU sa ilalim ng kamay na bakal ng rehimeng US-Duterte.Kasinungalingan ang ipinalabas sa midya ng tropa ng 3rd Platoon Alpha Company, 2nd IB na sinalakay sila ng mga pulang mandirigma nitong nakaraang Sabado, Setyembre 16, bandang alas-4 ng hapon sa Brgy. Libertad, Cawayan, Masbate.
Walang kamalay-malay at nanonood lamang ng basketball si Vincent Jaylord Vereces Pequiro, 15 taong gulang, nang barilin ng mga nakatambay na mga militar. Samantala, sugatan naman si Reymart Versaga, 23 taong gulang, sa sumunod na walang habas na pamumutok. Kapwa residente ng Brgy. Libertad ang dalawang biktima.
Bago ang pamamaril ay nag-iinuman ang mga militar sa tinatambayang barangay hall at plasa. Sa gitna ng kanilang inuman, pumutok ang isa sa kanilang mga baril. Nasugatan ang isang elemento ng militar. Upang itago ang kanilang kapalpakan sa pagsisiguro ng kanilang mga armas at kaligtasan ng mga taong nakapaligid dito, kagyat na pinuntirya ng mga ito ang binatilyong si Vincent dahil nakasuot ito ng patig na shorts. Matapos ang pamamaril, walang habas na nagpaputok ang mga pasista. Pinapalabas nilang sinalakay sila sa day care center ng mga NPA upang bigyang matwid ang umalingawngaw na putok ng mga baril.
Gaano man ang pagkukumahog ng 2nd IB na itago ang tunay na pangyayari at imanipula ang mga balita pabor sa kanilang panig, patuloy na lalabas ang katotohanan. Maraming nakasaksi sa pangyayari. Hindi maikukubli ang kawalan nila ng disiplina’t sapilitang paggamit ng mga pampublikong lugar sa mga barangay na kanilang iniikotan para sa kanilang mga bisyo’t layaw. Hindi maikukubli ang kawalang puso’t pagtarget sa mga sibilyan na para bang sila’y mga basyo lamang ng boteng pagprapraktisan sa pagtudla. Matagal nang idinadaing ng buong Masbate ang laganap na abusong militar sa mga isla nito.
Karapatan ng mamamayang Masbateno na labanan ang mga abusong militar sa ilalim ng brutalidad ng estado. Karapatan ng mamamayang Pilipino na singilin ang sinumang ahente ng estadong walang pakundangang lumalabag sa kanilang mga karapatan. Subalit sa harap ng paparaming kaso ng paglabag sa karapatang tao sa rehiyon, nanatiling inutil ang mga tinaguriang “tagapagsilbi ng mamamayan” na iniluklok sa poder nitong nakaraang eleksyon. Ang pananatiling nyutral sa gitna ng kalunus-lunos na pagyurak sa mga karapatang tao ay pagkatig sa mga mandarahas.
Hinahamon ng NDF-Bikol ang lahat ng lingkod bayan na tumindig para sa mamamayan. Hinihikayat ng NDF-Bikol ang lahat ng mga kagawad ng midya na tumungo sa mga pamayanan, suriin ang mga balita at buksan ang lahat ng daluyan para sa malayang pagpapalaganap ng impormasyon.

The New People’s Army – North Central Mindanao lauds the Mt. Kitanglad Sub-Regional Command – New People’s Army in their successful disarmament against LitoyMarabe, a usurer in Bukidnon and on the other hand, condemns the fake news promulgated by the 8th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army.
On September 9, 2017, 8:30 AM, Red fighters dis-armed Marabe, with his private security guards, in Barangay Tugaya, Valencia city, Bukidnon. This operation was coinciding to Marabe doing his lending activities to the workers of SUMIFRU Company. Seized from the said action were an M16 rifle (M4), a .45 caliber pistol, a VHF radio and a handcuff.
According to reports from the NPA in Mt. Kitanglad, Marabe is a big-time usurer and the owner of Asian Hills Bank. Marabe have had been afflicting small businessmen, workers and farmers through his Micro-finance loan, a lending scheme. He pretended that he had been helpful to those who were lending from him, through a low interest rate per month, yet with countless deductions and beguile calculations. Hence, this action answers the demand of the masses and serves as a warning, not only to the Marabe family, but as well as to the oppressive businessmen and usurers who’s afflicting the people.
On the same day, around 6:00 AM, the 8th IB PA, under the supervision of 2nd Lt. Patricio and 1st Lt. Hernandez, once again promulgated their fake news that there was an encounter between them and the NPA in Purok 1, Magsaysay, Quezon, Bukidnon and they “seized three long firearms after the 10-minutes encounter.” But according to the NPA unit in South Central Bukidnon Sub-Regional Command, there were no NPA fighters operating in the said place on that day, but only residents and farmers who were in their farmlands. The NPA even warned the soldiers not to fire their guns indiscriminately since there are several women in the community who just gave birth.
Prior to this incident, August 23, 2017, 6:00 AM, this similar AFP unit conducted a combat operation in Purok 9, Kiburiao, Quezon, Bukidnon and fired indiscriminately to the farmers who were planting that time. As their usual deed, the AFP immediately propagated this incident as an encounter between the NPA. After the incident, they then arrested two farmers, Ruel and Erick Callot, and forced them to claim the bombs which were taken by the soldiers in a hut, 200 meters from the house of the captive.
These situations further intensified the anger of the people and of the revolutionary movement, for the felonious military seemingly used US-Duterte’s martial law as license to their roughshod military operations in the countryside which gravely affect the livelihood and violate the people’s rights of the people.
Hence, we reiterate our demand to the people to be open-minded and discern the events in our society, if the propaganda of those whom we identify as leaders of the country are truly serving the interest of the people. More than ever, we must oppose the devious intention of the US-Duterte regime of prolonging the imposition of martial law and of the possibility of extending this to the entire country so he could flawlessly implement his OPlanKapayapaan, which is a counter-insurgency program that targets to exterminate the legitimate people’s struggle against the oppressive and exploitative system, yet has no plans for continuing the peace talks with the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP); OPlanTokhang, which only aims against small and ordinary drug-users, yet has no concrete programs for rehabilitation and livelihood to the victims; and his war-against terror, which whipped-up a Maute-ISIS scare to justify the direct intervention of foreign countries, especially US, in the country’s internal contradictions yet has not given any consideration to the legitimate demands of the Moro people’s right to self-determination.

The National Democratic Front of the Philippines – North Central Mindanao Region (NDFP-NCMR) fervently condemns the US-Duterte’s martial law, which does not have a big difference of Marcos’ martial law, 45 years ago. However, the state’s fangs became sharper in implementing this, considering the massive killings which already victimized more or less 10,000 already.
Widespread human rights violations
It could be recalled that under the horrifying martial law of Marcos, 3,240 were killed through salvage and summary executions, 70,000 were imprisoned, 34,000 were tortured, and 1,000 were desaparacedos. Marcos successfully implemented these through scrapping the writ of habeas corpus and through the predominance of military forces over all aspects of the society.
To manipulate public opinion, Marcos shut-downed all media stations and suppressed them from exposing the facts under his dictatorship. This resulted to extensive press freedom violations. The people were also deprived of their right to organization and assembly.
Up until now, thousands of the victims and families of those victims were still echoing for justice. Bunch of those who were abducted are not yet being surfaced.
Despite of the grave injustice of the previous martial law, US-Duterte Regime was still determined in imposing this in Mindanao and even threatened the public to implement this nationwide.
At present, not less than 200,000 families forcedly evacuated from their communities in Marawi City. Thousands of civilians were killed, including those who died in the evacuation center and those tagged as ‘Maute’ who were killed by the soldiers. 29,250 displaced students are also at the evacuation centers and forcedly stopped from going to school. Not less than 100 civilians are also missing until present.
Aside from Marawi City, the Lumad in the countryside are also experiencing human rights violations, under the concealed OPlan Kapayapaan of Duterte. Through his martial law, the soldiers, policemen, and its paramilitary groups are licensed to harass, kill, threat and violate the basic rights of the Lumad. Hence, up until now, the Lumad are still in their shanties in front of the Capitol Grounds in Bukidnon to demand the end of militarization in their communities.
On July 12, members of PNP Public Safety Company arbitrarily arrested a couple Ryan and Gretchen Espera, member of Kasama-Bukidnon, a peasant’s progressive organization in the province. Marcos and his cronies such as Rodolfo Cuenca, Herminio Disini, Roberto Benedicto, and Eduardo Cojuangco benefitted from the imposition of terror. With this, Marcos also secured an ill-gotten wealth range from $5-35 billion. Up until now, this was not returned to the people, the rightful owner of the wealth.
Duterte’s martial law is also the same. While there are a lot of civilians who were treated as “collateral damage” in the OPlan Tokhang, he also implemented his plans of installing different infrastructures, through his “Build, build, build.” He submitted Marawi to his businessmen/capitalists accomplice so they could “rehabilitate” this and enjoy the large amount of fund indebted from China which would eventually make the Philippines as “debt slave.”
To acquiesce the US’ “war on terror,” he bombed Marawi and its adjacent communities almost every day which abet the AFP another P1 billion additional budget for the purchase of bombs, ammos, and fuel. This would be another racket for corruption of the generals. He bluffs about exterminating the “terrorists” which is in fact, exterminating the people’s legitimate struggle. This war on terror is only a concealment to ultimately squeeze out the country’s remaining resources.
People’s struggle
The two dictator’s basis of imposing martial law is common: the people’s struggle.
The Filipino people greatly struggle during the Marcos dictatorship. This could be seen with the founding of Kabataang Makabayan (KM) on 1964. On 1968, Communist Party of the Philippines was also reestablished and was followed on 1969 by the New People’s Army (NPA). The people’s discontentment became blatant. The fascist dictator Marcos then imposed martial law on 1972.
Also at present, the revolutionary movement strengthened. Mass bases of the revolutionary movement expanded, NPA fighters increased in numbers, the resistance of the Moro people and of the national minorities intensified, and the demands of the oppressed and exploited became widespread.
Hence, it could be remembered that instead of conducting peace talks with the NDFP, Duterte instead demanded to sign a bilateral ceasefire. Since US-Duterte regime failed to do so, he just implemented martial law.
But more than remembering the dark days of the Filipino people during Marcos’ martial law, we should also remember the heroic uprising of the people which decisively paved way to the end of martial law. Through EDSA People Power Uprising on 1986 and through the armed struggle, the repugnant martial law was scrapped and the fascist dictator was ousted. It could be remembered that thousands of activists, especially among the youth and students, held arms to ultimately fight the fascist dictator.
Hence, the NDF-NCMR call upon all the people to further strengthen our unity and resist martial law in Mindanao and its pending implementation nationwide. We will never allow the horror of martial law which was already at its wake 31 years had passed!

The National Democratic Front of the Philippines – North Central Mindanao Region (NDFP-NCMR) fervently condemns the US-Duterte’s martial law, which does not have a big difference of Marcos’ martial law, 45 years ago. However, the state’s fangs became sharper in implementing this, considering the massive killings which already victimized more or less 10,000 already.
Widespread human rights violations
It could be recalled that under the horrifying martial law of Marcos, 3,240 were killed through salvage and summary executions, 70,000 were imprisoned, 34,000 were tortured, and 1,000 were desaparacedos. Marcos successfully implemented these through scrapping the writ of habeas corpus and through the predominance of military forces over all aspects of the society.
To manipulate public opinion, Marcos shut-downed all media stations and suppressed them from exposing the facts under his dictatorship. This resulted to extensive press freedom violations. The people were also deprived of their right to organization and assembly.
Up until now, thousands of the victims and families of those victims were still echoing for justice. Bunch of those who were abducted are not yet being surfaced.
Despite of the grave injustice of the previous martial law, US-Duterte Regime was still determined in imposing this in Mindanao and even threatened the public to implement this nationwide.
At present, not less than 200,000 families forcedly evacuated from their communities in Marawi City. Thousands of civilians were killed, including those who died in the evacuation center and those tagged as ‘Maute’ who were killed by the soldiers. 29,250 displaced students are also at the evacuation centers and forcedly stopped from going to school. Not less than 100 civilians are also missing until present.
Aside from Marawi City, the Lumad in the countryside are also experiencing human rights violations, under the concealed OPlan Kapayapaan of Duterte. Through his martial law, the soldiers, policemen, and its paramilitary groups are licensed to harass, kill, threat and violate the basic rights of the Lumad. Hence, up until now, the Lumad are still in their shanties in front of the Capitol Grounds in Bukidnon to demand the end of militarization in their communities.

GRP President Duterte was quoted by news reports yesterday saying he was open or not averse to resuming peace talks with the NDFP.
As the Party and NDFP has often stated, it is the policy of the revolutionary forces to remain open to peace negotiations with any ruling regime that expresses willingness to seriously discuss the roots of the armed conflict in accordance with previously agreed principles and procedures as stipulated in The Hague Declaration.
Thus, the NDFP-GRP peace negotiations can resume if Duterte will drop his earlier precondition of a bilateral ceasefire which became the single biggest factor which terminated the talks. The ball is still in Duterte’s hands.
Clearly, Duterte is resurrecting talks of peace negotiations as part of his damage control measures in the face of the increasing isolation of his regime. Duterte is widely blamed for terminating the NDFP-GRP negotiations because of his stubborn insistence to toe the US line of using peace talks as an instrument for the pacification and capitulation of the revolutionary forces.
While open to resuming peace talks with the Duterte regime, revolutionary forces are no longer hopeful that anything substantive will come out of it in the face of Duterte’s subservience to the interests of US imperialism and other big foreign capitalist countries.
How can negotiations on socio-economic questions go anywhere when Duterte zealously implements neoliberal policies and pushes for such anti-people policies as the Compressed Work Week or 12-hour workday, removal of restriction on foreign ownership of public utilities, debt-driven infrastructure projects and others?
What will come out of negotiations on political and constitutional reforms considering Duterte’s all-out subservience to the US military and its counter-insurgency doctrine and aerial bombardment campaign in Marawi and other parts of the country? Duterte’s triple war violates the human rights agreement with impunity. He could not even fulfill his vow to release political prisoners now numbering more than 400.

2 kidnappers killed in Zambo Norte

TWO kidnappers were killed in a firefight with Army soldiers out to rescue the son of a mayor earlier abducted by the suspects in Sibuco town in Zamboanga del Norte last Sunday afternoon.
The slain suspects have yet to be identified but the military said they belong to a kidnap-for-ransom group led by a former commander of the Moro National Liberation Front.
Troops from the Army’s 42nd Infantry Battalion were conducting rescue operations when they caught up with around 10 armed men in Barangay Panganuran around 2 p.m. Sunday, leading to a 10-minute firefight.
Capt. Jo-ann Petinglay, spokesperson of the AFP’s Western Mindanao Command, said soldiers later retrieved the bodies of the two suspects.
Petinglay said government soldiers also recovered a Garand rifle, a carbine automatic rifle, an improvised shotgun, ammunition, a camouflage uniform and documents.
Petinglay said the kidnappers were led by Ustadz Kadjo Tungayaw alias Commander Kadjo.
“Commander Kadjo was a former member of the Moro National Liberation Front. However, he was disowned by MNLF Commander Asbirin for coddling lawless and criminal elements in the area,” said Petinglay.
The military stepped up operations in Zamboanga del Norte since the kidnapping of Jade Quimbo, son of Mayor Eddie Quimbo of Labason town in Zamboanga del Norte Wednesday last week.
Reports said Jade was in his store in Barangay Poblacion when the suspects, posing as customers, seized him.
Four members of the Abu Sayyaf, including a minor, surrendered to the military on Saturday night in Pata island in Sulu. The four yielded an M16 rifle and three Garand riles.
The four were identified as 17-year-old Emar Ladjar Udjah; Aldin Hadil Akmad, 25; Willing Ibba Jaabal, 45, and Ijal Samsain Sadjal, 25.
Brig. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Joint Task Force Sulu, said the four surrendered through the efforts of the 3rd Sulu Civilian Active Auxiliary Company and the Special Intelligence Team.
