THE municipal government of Makilala, North Cotabato has awarded a certificate of commendation to the Army’s 39th Infantry Battalion in appreciation for the unit’s peace efforts and initiatives that paved the way in achieving an insurgency-free town.

Lawyer Ryan Tabanay, vice mayor of Makilala, North Cotabato, handed over the certificate of commendation to Lieutenant Colonel Ezra Balagtey, 39IB commander, in a convocation Monday, July 24, at the municipal grounds of Makilala.

Tabanay said the municipal government of Makiala is grateful to the contribution of the 39IB in the maintenance of peace and order.


“LGU (local government unit) Makilala has witnessed how dedicated 39IB together with other government agencies through Whole-of-Nation Approach in every aspect to achieve and sustain peace in our municipality that stabilizes our security which led to uplift Makilala’s economic status,” Tabanay said.

In previous years, the Guerrilla Front ALIP of the Far South Mindanao Region and the Pulang Bagani

Command of the Southern Mindanao Region Committee of the New People’s Army (NPA) thrived in Makilala town.

However, with the peace initiatives launched by the 39IB, through the Community Support Program, led to the collapse of the mass based and the organs of political power of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Makilala two years ago.

The collapse of the NPA’s mass base and political power led to the declaration of Makilala as an insurgency-free town through Municipal Peace and Order Council Resolution Number 306 dated April 12, 2023. (SunStar Zamboanga)
