The Philippine Army reported yesterday the surrender of a self-confessed New People’s Army assassin and a red fighter, who also turned over two guns to the 62nd Infantry Battalion in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.

Alias Ka Kulafu, who confessed to be a member of the Special Partisan Unit (SPARU) of the NPA Leonardo Panaligan Command, surrendered two 38 caliber revolvers,
Lt. Col. Melvin Flores, 62nd Infantry Battalion commander, said yesterday.

Flores said that
Ka Kulafu served the NPA for 15 years.

Another self-confessed NPA red fighter, identified only as Ka Motmot, and his comrades who figured in an encounter with Army soldiers on Aug. 14 in Brgy. Sandayao, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental, also surrendered to his unit, Flores added.

The encounter in Brgy. Sandayao, Guihulngan City claimed the life of an NPA red fighter, the arrest of another, and the rescue of two minors who are NPA recruits.


Guihulngan City Mayor Carlo George Joan Reyes welcomed the decision of the two NPA members to surrender and abandon the armed struggle.

Reyes, who chairs the local Task Force –ELCAC in Guihulngan City, also reiterated his call for the colleagues of the two surrendered NPA rebels to return to the folds of law, stressing also that the government is ready to help them and their respective families, for re-integration to mainstream society.
