4 suspected rebels fall in Negros clash

From Panay News (Aug 28, 2020): 4 suspected rebels fall in Negros clash (BY DOMINIQUE GABRIEL BAÑAGA)

Philippine Army troops captured four suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels early morning yesterday in Sitio Cunalom, Barangay Carabalan, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.

The following suspects were taken to the Himamaylan City police station: 41-year-old Jovel Pacheco; 37-year-old Francisco Verde Jr.; 32-year-old Gene Boy Verde; and 22-year-old Ronald Pacheco.

Lieutenant Colonel Angelo Guzman, 94th Infantry Battalion commander, said they responded to the area after receiving complaints from local residents that they were being extorted by the rebels for the past few weeks.

A five-minute gun battle ensued until the rebels backed away. The clash led to the arrest of the four NPAs, Guzman added.

The troops recovered from the encounter site a .22-caliber rifle, an improvised shotgun, two revolvers, a 40-mm grenade launcher ammunition and other subversive materials.

These firearms were immediately turned over to the Himamaylan City police.

The four captured insurgents face charges for illegal possession of firearms and explosives, as well as the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020.
