The Philippine Army recovered firearms while an unknown number of New People’s Army (NPA) members were wounded in a five-minute clash in an upland village of Calbiga, Samar on Sunday.
Troopers recovered two carbine rifles with fully loaded magazines at the clash site. Bloodstains were found along the route of withdrawal indicating casualties, said Lt. Col. Rhomel Langcauon, commander of the Philippine Army’s 46th Infantry Battalion (IB) in a statement sent to reporters on Monday.
“The encounter lasted only for about five minutes as the rebels immediately scampered to different directions, leaving two rifles in the encounter scene,” Langcauon said.
Acting on reports from villagers on NPA’s extortion activities, soldiers of the 46th IB intensified their combat operations in the boundaries of Canbagtic, Lawaan, and Sinalangtan villages in Calbiga town.
Operating troops of 46th IB are part of the team conducting pursuit operations against the communist terrorist group that attacked soldiers with anti-personnel landmines in Pinanag-an village in Borongan City, Eastern Samar on Nov. 11.
Earlier, the Philippine Army initially identified conflict-stricken villages in Calbiga town as priorities for the delivery of needed projects and services by the newly created regional task force on ending insurgency.
“Selected villages in Calbiga are beneficiaries of the services being delivered by the inter-agency team of the military and local government through the conduct of Retooled Community Support Program (RCSP),” Langcauon said.
The RCSP team conducts immersion in the villages to assess the needs and concerns of the local populace and address the same in order to uplift their living conditions and enhance development in the area.
Some of the villages in Calbiga have been known as sites of clashes between government troops and armed rebels. One of the bloodiest gun battles was on April 23, 2019, where six soldiers died and six others were hurt.
Samar Island is considered as one of the strongholds of armed rebels due to its densely-forested mountainous areas, high poverty incidence, and the issue of widespread landlessness, based on a 2013 study of William Norman Holden of the University of Calgary in Canada.
The NPA launched its first tactical operation in the country in Calbiga, Samar in 1974, when its members ambushed an Army scout patrol and seized a number of weapons.
The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
