ZAMBOANGA CITY, Nov 18 (PIA) – A hundred firearms, most of which were used by terror groups including the Abu Sayyaf were destroyed by the Western Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM) last week (November 14) during the visit of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Noel Clement here.

In a press statement, WESTMINCOM reports that 30 of these firearms were from Sulu, 17 from Basilan, 24 from the Zamboanga Peninsula and 29 from the Central Mindanao area.

The statement added that the destruction, or dimilitarization of the firearms “symbolizes the state’s authority and victory over those who use weapons to inflict threats and terror among the people”.

The military chief also visited recuperating soldiers who were wounded recently in a firefight with the Abu Sayyaf in Patikul, Sulu.

Meanwhile, General Clement lauded the efforts of the WESTMINCOM under Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana for their successful campaigns against insurgency. “The general headquarters is here to support you with all your requirements needed for the success of your assigned tasks,” he said.(NBE/DIS/PIA9-Zamboanga City with reports and photos from Western Mindanao Command Public Information Office)
