Residents of Bayang and in neighboring towns in Lanao del Sur have surrendered 44 assorted loose firearms to military authorities in that province, officials said Monday.

Col. Jose Maria Cuerpo II, the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade commander, said the firearms were surrendered to the troops of the 55th Infantry Battalion at 10 a.m. Monday in Bayang town.

Cuerpo said among the loose firearms that were surrendered were 27 .45-caliber pistols, one Garand rifle, one M653 Bushmaster, two M-79 grenade launchers, two M-203 tubes, two homemade Uzi sub-machine guns, five .38-caliber revolvers, one .380 pistol, a 9-mm pistol, M-16 Armalite rifle, and a .50-caliber sniper rifle.

“The concerted effort and intensified collaboration among our troops, the communities, local chief executives, and other stakeholders resulted in this remarkable accomplishment,” Cuerpo said.

Mayor Aslani Balt of Bayang, who facilitated the ceremonial turnover of the loose firearms, thanked the troops for their effort in sustaining peace and development in his town.

Meanwhile, Lt. Col. Ian Ignes, the Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion commander, urged the Meranao people to cooperate and support the authorities in the campaign against the proliferation of firearms in their communities.

Ignes said that through the campaign, locals will feel more secure and safe in their daily activities.

Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) chief, said the campaign against loose firearms will enable them to put an end to the problems on terrorism and other criminalities, including clan wars.
