CAMP MELCHOR DELA CRUZ, Gamu, Isabela -- The Philippine Army's Northern Luzon Command (Nolcom) chief is thankful to local government unit (LGU) officials for giving their all-out support to the fight against communist guerrillas.

“We have been getting a 100-percent local government support in our fight against the communists,”
Lt. Gen. Ramiro Rey, Nolcom commander, told newsmen on Thursday afternoon.

The LGUs' declaration of communist rebels as persona non grata or undesirable in the community is a big help in their war on insurgency, he said.

Rey was at the 5th Infantry Division where he talked to soldiers and inculcated in them the virtues of discipline and love for family as two basic principles that good soldiers must uphold.

He asked soldiers to always love their families and be obedient to the lawful orders of military heads.

Major General Pablo Lorenzo, 5th Infantry Division commander, said the fight against the communist rebels would be beefed up with two new battalions and two sniper companies following the detachment of two battalions, the 21st Infantry and 41st Infantry, which were absorbed in Sulu.

“We hope to fill up at least 2,233 new soldiers and applicants until October 10,” he said.

“Those New People’s Army (surrenderers) and Civilian Armed Force Geographical Units can be elevated into regular soldiers. We have precedents like in Mindanao wherein the MILF became soldiers. We have also former CPLAs (Cordillera People's Liberation Army) who became soldiers,” Lorenzo said.
