The Province of Davao Oriental is set to transfer six former members of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) and the rebel group's Milisya ng Bayan to a halfway house after yielding to the government last week.

In an interview on Monday, Karen Lou Deloso, the provincial information officer, said the surrenderers are awaiting proper documentation for them to be turned over to the 701st Brigade’s Ugnayan Center, where they will
undergo a 10-day deradicalization course in preparation for their enrolment to the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP).

Deloso said the former rebels will then be
transferred to a halfway house called Happy Home, a facility for former rebels.

“At the Happy Home, they are set to undergo series of trainings, rehabilitation activities, and receive scores of benefits, including livelihood and financial assistance,” she said.

Lt. Col. Alexander Banatao, commanding Officer of the 28th Infantry Battalion, said the surrenderers led government troops in recovering the firearms they hid in a hinterland area in Barangay San Isidro, Lupon, where the former rebels used to operate.

Banatao said the surrender “means a huge victory for the government’s peace and development campaign.”

One of the surrenderers, NPA team leader Jan-jan (not his real name), narrated to military authorities that he and his comrades fled the NPA because they could no longer bear the hardships in the mountains.

“We experienced hunger, fatigue from days of walking, and sleepless nights -- all mixed with the fear for our lives and our families,” the former rebel said.

“They promised us a good life for our families. But none of those promises ever came true,” he added, referring to the NPA.
