From the Manila Bulletin (Aug 13, 2019): Soldier wounded in Patikul bomb blast
A member of the military’s K9 unit was seriously wounded in a bomb explosion in Patikul town of Sulu on Tuesday.
Brig. Gen. Marni Marcos, director of the Bangsamoro of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) regional police, said the injured soldier was hit by a second explosion while he was securing a first explosion site in Barangay Igasan.
“The second explosion occurred some 10 meters away from the first explosion site,” said Marcos.
The wounded soldier was identified as Corporal Rene Mediana of the 43rd K9 platoon of the Philippine Army.
Major Arvin Encinas, Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) spokesperson, also confirmed the name of the injured soldier.
Marcos said the first blast occurred at around 7:30 a.m. in Sitio Tibong-Tibong in Barangay Igasan. There was no reported casualty in the first blast.
Elements of the 13th Special Forces Company (SFC) along with the Army’s K9 unit were then sent to the blast site to secure the area and to investigate.
An hour later, the second improvised explosive device went off at around 8:30 a.m. about 10 meters from where the first suspected IED went off, and wounded Medina while the troops were conducting clearing operations.
According to Encinas, Mediana was hit by multiple shrapnels in the lower parts of his body. He was rushed to the nearest hospital in the area for immediate treatment.
Authorities have yet to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive of the attack but suspected that the blasts were the handiwork of the Abu Sayyaf Group.
