The Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) bandits killed three people, including a three-year-old boy, and injured another in Sulu as the Muslim world was celebrating Eid’l Adha, officials said Tuesday.

Maj. Gen. Corleto Vinluan Jr., Joint Task Force Sulu commander, said the ambush that occurred around 8:45 a.m. Monday in Barangay Kagay, Talipao town, also killed a soldier of the Army’s 2nd Special Forces Battalion and a militiaman.

Vinluan said the soldier and the militiaman were traversing the Patikul-Talipao road aboard a motorcycle when the ASG bandits staged an ambush killing them instantaneously.

He said the three-year-old boy who was hit in the ambush expired around 12 noon at the Integrated Provincial Health Office “due to the severity of injury incurred.”

The other victim, a 10-year-old student of Kagay Elementary School, remains in an unstable condition at a hospital, the military official said.

He said the Joint Task Force (JTF) Sulu has immediately provided assistance to the family of the two innocent children.

“We are deeply saddened by this very unfortunate incident that killed two of our valiant personnel and an innocent child,” Vinluan said.

“We assure the families and friends of the victims that the JTF Sulu will do our best to ensure that the perpetrators of this treacherous act will be brought to justice. This blatant disregard for the spirit of Islamic festivities is a clear disrespect of the Islam teachings," Vinluan said.

He also appealed to the entire Tausug community "not to succumb to the ASG’s desperate move of sowing fear among our people. Hence, I urge the peace-loving Tausug people to strongly condemn this un-Islamic and treacherous act of the ASG."

Meanwhile, the relatives of the victims and the Suluanos expressed willingness to assist the law enforcers in tracking down and signified their commitment to hunt down ASG members entering their communities.

“We deeply condemn this very deceitful act of the Abu Sayyaf, who do not in any way represent the Islamic way of living,” said Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Westmincom chief.

“We would like to extend our sympathy to the bereaved families of the victims of the Abu Sayyaf’s inhumane act. Rest assured all sorts of assistance will be provided as our simple way of commiseration,” Sobejana added.
