From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 13, 2019): Police nabs 'most wanted' NPA leader

A team leader of the New People's Army (NPA) and a most wanted person was arrested by authorities in a joint operation conducted at Purok 7 Barangay San Roque, New Corella, Davao Del Norte, on Sunday afternoon.

Capt. Maria Theresita Gaspan, spokesperson of Davao City Police Office (DCPO)
identified the arrested NPA leader as Leonilo Sumampong Gonzales, alias Commander Banakon, and a resident of Barangay San Roque, New Corella, Davao del Norte.

She said Gonzales, 44, is number 2 on the list of Top 10 most wanted person by the local police.


Gonzales was arrested by virtue of several warrants of arrest for murder, frustrated murder, multiple attempted murder, homicide, and robbery.

“For now he was turned over to the DCPO (Davao City Police Office) because all his cases were in Davao city," Gaspan said.

Col. Nolasco Mempin, commander of the Army's 1003rd Infantry Brigade, identified Gonzales as a team leader of the NPA's Baking Segunda, Basil Platoon of Pulang Bagani Company (PBC) 1.

Mempin said the suspect's cases are NPA-related activities.
