A child soldier of the New People's Army (NPA) and two other communist guerillas surrendered in Impasug-ong, Bukidnon over the weekend, the Army's 8th Infantry Battalion (8IB) said Tuesday.
In a press release, 8IB identified the three surrenderers as 17-year old alias Marben; his brother, 19-year-old alias Rodel, who served in one of the units of the NPA's North Central Mindanao Regional Command (NCMRC); and alias Ryan, 26, who is said to be a supply officer of a unit belonging to the NCMRC.
They brought with them one .45-caliber handgun with four bullets, a Garand rifle loaded with three bullets and a Carbine with 20 rounds of ammunition, the Army said.
Lt. Col. Ronald Illana, 8IB commander, lauded the assistance of the troops belonging to the indigenous peoples in the area who helped the surrenderers return to the fold of the law.
"I appreciate the effort of our IP soldiers for negotiating with our surrenderers. The Philippine Army is expecting more surrenderers from you," Illana said, as he called on the remaining rebels in the hinterlands to "come down and be with your family; we will help you."
Lt. Gen. Felimon Santos Jr., commander of the Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom), condemned the NPA's recruitment of minors, describing the act as "child exploitation."
“I could see my children in you. At a very young age, you were deceived by the CPP-NPA terrorists. They used your inability to read and write as an advantage. They have been using you without you knowing the real life in the mountains. It breaks my heart to see you suffer this misery,” Santos said.
Illana said 8IB has so far recorded 132 NPA surrenderers within the year, who he said have been given livelihood assistance as well as monetary remuneration for surrendered firearms.
