Learning the legacy left behind by local heroes in Cebu has become exciting and convenient as the Central Command (Centcom) on Tuesday brought the lessons through an exhibit to schools, the Armed Forces of the Philippines' 3rd Civil Relations Group here said.
Maj. Christian Uy, chief of the 3rd CRG based in Camp Lapu-Lapu here, said a photo static display was conceptualized to “rekindle and instill back to the minds of the community, especially the minds of the young people, the contribution of the local heroes to the freedom that we have right now.”
“They don’t need to go to the museums and learn about our forefathers who fought against the colonizers. Right in their schools, they can now learn how Leon Kilat, Gen. Arcadio Maxilom, the Cuatro Aliños in Talisay, among other local heroes, fought against the Spaniards,” Uy said in an interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA).
Uy said the high school students, who went to the exhibit’s opening ceremony at the Abellana National School (ANS) here, were happy to see for the first time pictures and life stories of the local heroes.
“The students just learn the local heroes by the names of the streets. Now, they have a venue to know who these people were and what were their contributions to Cebu’s existence,” he said, adding that the “younger generations need more awareness to revitalize the sacrifices and risks of our fallen heroes in the past and in the modern times.”
Ray Kimilat, head of teaching operations of ANS, thanked the Armed Forces of the Philippines for bringing knowledge on local heroes to their schools.
The month-long exhibit that will also be brought to other schools in Cebu is in line with the country’s observance of National Heroes' Day on August 26.
Aside from local heroes, Staff Sgt. Joy dela Peña said they also featured national, World War II, and modern-day heroes.
The 3rd CRG partnered with Museo Sugbo and Photographers Club of Cebu for this project, she said.
After the ANS, the exhibits will go to Colegio dela Inmaculada Concepcion in Cebu City and Talisay City College.
