The BRP Conrado Yap (PS-39), formerly the South Korean Pohang-class corvette, the "Chungju", left on Monday Jinhae Naval Base in Changwon City, South Korea for its return to the Philippines.
Lt. Cmdr. Maria Christina A. Roxas, acting Philippine Navy (PN) spokesperson, said the ship and its crew left Pier 7 in the afternoon of August 12.
The BRP Conrado Yap, on its voyage to Manila, is now under the command of Capt. Marco Buena and is being manned by more than 100 crew who underwent 13 weeks of operational and warfare training in South Korea.
"The ex-Pohang-class corvette will meet BRP Davao Del Sur (LD-602) at sea for a group sail and conduct naval maneuvers while en route to Manila.
LD-602 earlier had its sendoff with ROKN (Republic of Korean Navy) at Pier 11 in Jinhae Naval Base.
It previously participated in the Russian Navy Day in Vladivostok (Russia) during the last week of July before it proceeded to South Korea to accompany home the newly-commissioned corvette," Roxas said.
The BRP Conrado Yap is expected to arrive in Manila in less than a week and will be welcomed by a PN ship at the vicinity of Manila Bay.
Roxas said the Navy will also render arrival honors for the two ships which will be led by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
The arrival of the BRP Conrado Yap will boost the PN's anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare capabilities, the military said.
BRP Davao Del Sur's journey also attested that the PN is now capable of sustaining operations in open oceans. BRP Conrado Yap was formally turned over to the PN last August 5.
The ship measures 88.3 meters long, with a beam of 10 meters and a draft of 2.9 meters with displacement at 1,216 tons full load and is rated for a crew of 118 personnel and can sustain operational presence for 20 days.
BRP Conrado Yap's combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion configuration of motor transport unit (MTU) diesel engines and LM2500 gas turbine with controllable pitch propellers (CPP) enable the ship to move to a maximum speed of 25 knots to a distance of 4,000 nautical miles.
The ship is armed with two Oto Melara 76mm main guns, a 30mm automatic cannon, anti-submarine torpedoes and variety of sensors, including sonars, and radars.
