AMPATUAN, Maguindanao -- Government forces, acting on a tip from concerned citizens on Sunday, seized high powered firearms from two safe houses of private armed groups in Barangay Kauran here.

Lt. Col. Alvin Iyog, 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion commander, said the soldiers immediately acted on the tip, initiating clearing operations in the area.

During clearing operations at 5 p.m., soldiers found two M-16 rifles, an M-16 with an M-203 grenade launcher, two M-14 rifles, an M-79 grenade launcher, 10 long M-16 magazines, 10 short M-16 magazines, 16 long M-14 magazines, and some 1,300 rounds of ammunition for various calibers.

The safe houses were owned by Nords Plantis and Guialil Mohamad Dalundong, who were not around during the Army operation.

“With the civilian community’s support, the military has pre-empted terroristic activities of criminals in the area,” Iyog said in a statement.

Col. Efren Baluyot, 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade commander, has directed Iyog and his men to continue hunting down Plantis and Dalundong as there is a possibility they are still in possession of more high-powered guns.

Maj. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, the 6th Infantry Division commander, has appealed to civilians to continue working with the military to prevent lawless elements from sowing terror in remote communities.
