“We are very happy to return to Negros”, its commander, Lt. Col. Carlo Ferrer, said yesterday.
The return of 11IB to Negros, after two years of assignment in Zamboanga City, brings to five the number of Army battalions presently assigned in the island.
“We are happy to help in keeping the peace in Negros,” Ferrer said.
The 11IB was replaced Zamboanga City by 74th Infantry Battalion in that came from Basilan.
Brig. Gen. Roberto Ancan, commanding general of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division, and Mayor Beng Climaco led the send-off ceremony honors to the 11IB at the port of Zamboanga on Saturday.
It was not determined yet what areas in Negros the 11IB will be deployed.
Brig. Gen. Ignacio Madriaga, 302nd Infantry Brigade commander, yesterday said that the 11IB troops will undergo a refresher training before they will be dispatched to the area of their assignment in Negros.
The 11IB troopers are still on board a Philippine Navy ship docked at the Dumaguete City port, pending arrival honors to be initiated by the 3rd Infantry Division and Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo today.
Madriaga earlier said that the return of 11IB to Negros Oriental is a welcome development, it will help fast-track their objective of clearing the province of armed insurgents sooner than anticipated and make the whole Region 7 insurgency-free.
The 11IB was deployed in Zamboanga two years ago to prevent the spread of terroristic activities of the Abu Sayyaf bandit group.
