DND cites solon for backing AFP modernization

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 25, 2019): DND cites solon for backing AFP modernization

The Department of National Defense (DND) on Monday welcomed the expression of support from Leyte Representative-elect Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, who earlier joined President Rodrigo R. Duterte's call for more budget allocation for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Modernization Program.

"We welcome Congressman-elect Romualdez's manifestation of support for the AFP's ongoing Revised Modernization Program as this is an important thrust towards our objective of achieving a credible defense posture and sustainment of our efforts in addressing the internal and external threats that our nation are facing," DND spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said in a message to the Philippine News Agency when asked to comment on the matter.

The Revised AFP Modernization Program is divided into three horizons -- the first was implemented from 2013 to 2017, the second is from 2018 to 2022, while the third is from 2023 to 2028.

“We need to ensure that the AFP Modernization Program is on track so that government troops would continue to serve the nation and protect the country from all threats,” Romualdez earlier said.

Aside from this, the Leyte solon is pushing for more funding for welfare programs serving military dependents.

The incoming lawmaker added that the 18th Congress should also consider as a top priority the allocation of additional budget for military personnel who are leading the fight against terrorists and extremists.
