Army Battalion from Sulu redeployed to Davao

From the Philippine Information Agency (May 18): Army Battalion from Sulu redeployed to Davao



The 16th Infantry Battalion has been deployed to Davao City from Jolo, Sulu.

The 400-strong battalion was sent to the city to help augment security measures against threats to peace and security.

They will reinforce the Task Force Davao in securing the peripheries of the sprawling city.

“We are thankful for the added security.” Mayor Sara Duterte said of the deployment.

Last April 29, New People’s Army attack several facilities of private businesses in Davao City and Panabo. One of the targets was the box manufacturing plant of the banana company Lapanday. The manufacturing plant was burned down, estimates to the damage was pegged at P2-billion while displacing 700 to1000 workers.

Four persons were killed in the attack which included three rebels and a civilian, Larry Timbal, a fish vendor hit by an IED exploded intended for responding Army’s armored personnel carriers.
