From the Philippine Information Agency (May 18): 1 NPA killed, 2 camps discovered in Kalinga
The military reported one suspected New People’s Army guerilla was killed and a soldier was slightly wounded during an encounter last May 13 at Sitio Ibong, Balbalasang, this town.
A team led by 2Lt. Julius Tecson of the 50th Infantry Battalion identified the dead NPA as a certain Rudy Miguel @Marcial/Dek/Alay), alleged member of Squad Uno, Marcial Daggay Command.
Recovered from the encounter scene were a rifle and two magazines with 46 rounds 5.56 ammunition believed to belong to the slain, a press release of the 56th IB Civil-Military Operations stated.
On May 10, operating troops also led by 2Lt. Tecson discovered two NPA camps in this hinterland municipality bringing to four the discovered camps in the area of responsibility of the Defender Battalion this year.
Found on these camps were 15 huts, 2 kitchens, 4 comfort rooms, 2 guard posts, a camouflage poncho, 2 pieces tent, flashlight, cooking pan, 9 coconut shells used as bowls, 30 pieces plastic spoons, 3 celpone chargers, 1 celphone headset, 5 batch soap, a 1.5 meters long wire, and a sketch map.
In February of this year, Army troopers also seized two camps of the NPA in Balbalan.
Last week, government negotiators tasked to secure peace with the National Democratic Front (NDF) held a two-day consultation-workshop with government officials and community leaders of the Cordilleras on proposed social and economic reforms being discussed with communist guerrillas.
The consultation centered on the discussions of the Comprehensive Agreement on Social and Economic Reforms (CASER) and joint ceasefire agreement has to be ensured in order to put at work the successful implementation of reforms, a security mechanism – ceasefire.
