96 aspiring soldiers start training in Cagayan de Oro City

From the Philippine News Agency (May 18): 96 aspiring soldiers start training in Cagayan de Oro City

CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City —- Ninety- six aspiring soldiers took their oath here to join the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), a military official said Thursday.

Capt. Joe Patrick Martinez, 4th Infantry Division (ID) spokesperson, said that 87 males and nine females were qualified to train as soldiers.

The selection process involved qualifying examinations that test the limits of their mental and physical abilities to prove their worth as among the best from the pool of aspirants who want to join the army, Martinez said.

He said that as candidate soldiers, the 96 individuals would undergo the rigors of basic military training to transform their characters into "grown up men and women in contrast to their carefree civilian lives."

The training would last for six months involving skills and knowledge in combat fighting, life-saving imperatives, disaster response operation, peacekeeping initiatives, human rights, rule of law and the rules of engagement.

During the oathtaking ceremony, Maj. Gen. Benjamin Madrigal, Jr., commander of the Army’s 4the ID, said that “I have great faith in each one of you. The 4th ID would support you in your future undertakings, as you would also help us accomplish our mission to win the peace in this side of the country and to fulfill our vision that by 2028, we will be a world-class Army that is a source of national pride.”
