Skipper of visiting US warship traces roots to Filipino parents

From Malaya Business Insight (Nov 18): Skipper of visiting US warship traces roots to Filipino parents

A UNITED States warship docked at the former American naval base in Subic Bay in Zambales on Wednesday for a port call, the third US ship to pay such visit during the administration of President Duterte.

The ship and the Marines onboard are part of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, which provides US military leaders and coalition partners a flexible force that can rapidly respond to contingencies and crisis.

“Several Filipino-American sailors and Marines will also spend time with their families and experience the local culture while learning about their own heritage,” the US embassy said.

The ship’s commanding officer, Cmdr. Gervy Alota, said his parents were born in the Philippines.

The embassy said USS Comstock and other ships of the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group are currently on a routine patrol in the US 7th Fleet area of operations.
