From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 2): Police arrest Abu Sayyaf spotter, pal in Zambo City

The local police authorities have averted possible kidnapping as they arrested an Abu Sayyaf spotter and a companion following a chase early Thursday in this city.

Chief Insp. Edilberto Alvarez, intelligence chief of the local police, identified them as Alhnur Usup, 28, the Abu Sayyaf spotter and his companion, Jamal Labuan, 32.

Alvarez said that Usup, who carries the aliases of Arab-Arab and Arab Puti, is among the spotters of the Abu Sayyaf Group “as well as conducting surveillance for prospective targets for kidnapping in Zamboanga City.”

Alvarez said that Usup is a follower of Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf leader Idang Susukan.

Alvarez said Usup and Labuan were arrested before 1 a.m. Thursday near an eatery in Barangay Canelar, this city.

Alvarez said prior to the arrest of the suspects, they served warrant of arrest against Usup at his rented house in Barangay San Roque.

However, he said Usup was able to escape and fled aboard a motorcycle together with Labuan.

He said they chased and was able to corner the suspects near an eatery in Barangay Canelar.

He said Usup has a standing warrant of arrest for murder with PHP200,000 recommended bail issued by a court in Parang, Sulu.

He said they confiscated from the possession of Usup and Labuan a grenade, three sachets of methamphetamine hydrochloride locally known as shabu, prohibited drugs paraphernalia, a motorcycle and two motorcycle receipts.

He said they also recovered two motorcycles believed to be stolen at the rented house of Usup.
