From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 2): 2 soldiers killed, 5 hurt in clash with Maute group remnants

Two soldiers from the 65th Infantry Battalion were killed while another five were wounded in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack and ambush instigated by surviving members of the Maute terrorist group in Butig, Lanao del Sur Wednesday night.

Major Felimon Tan, Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom) spokesperson, said the incident took place at 6:21 p.m. in Barangay Sandab, Butig town where government troops were conducting routine security patrols.

In the ensuing clash, two soldiers were killed while another five were wounded along with an undetermined number of the terrorists.

Tan said the wounded were promptly evacuated by troops of the 103rd Infantry Brigade to a hospital in Iligan and in Kuta Cesar Sang-an Station in Pulacan, Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.

With this development, the number of government troop casualties in action is now at four killed and 15 wounded while terrorists losses were estimated at 54, with 37 "validated killed."

The military offensive against the Maute group started last May 26.

In a related development, another training camp of the terrorists were seized by 51st Infantry Battalion troops during clearing operations Wednesday at Barangay Poctan, Butig, Lanao del Sur.

The captured camp is capable of housing an estimated 100 terrorists.
