Philippine soldier linked to murder of tribal chieftain in South

From the Mindanao Examiner (Apr 17): Philippine soldier linked to murder of tribal chieftain in South

A tribal leader fighting for the rights of indigenous people was shot dead in an attack by a suspected government soldier in San Fernando town in Bukidnon province in southern Philippines, television reports said on Friday.

It said Asang Araño, who was also a member of the Federation of San Fernando Matigsalug Tigwahanon and Manobo Tribes was murdered inside his house in the village of Iglusad.

ABS-CBN news said an army soldier was linked to the killing. Police launched an investigation into the attack. It said Araño’s group has been opposing mining operations in the area.

The Philippine Army has not issued any statement about the allegation, but soldiers had been implicated by human rights groups in many human rights violations and extra-judicial killings in the country.
