US helicopters conduct air assault training in Fort Magsaysay

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 17): US helicopters conduct air assault training in Fort Magsaysay

With Balikatan 2015 about to start in three day's time, three American helicopters, out of the 76 aircraft that will take part in this year's military maneuvers, conducted a series of exercises in Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija last April 14.

The Philippine Air Force will contribute 15 aircraft to this year's Balikatan while the Australian Defense Forces will send one for the 10-day activity.

Capt. Mark Anthony Ruelos, 7th Infantry Division spokesperson in a statement Friday, said the US helicopters, which consist of one Boeing CH-47 "Chinook" and two Sikorsky UH-60 "Black Hawk" initiated the so-called air assault training.

The latter activity is part of the combined field training exercise between the US forces and Philippine Army troopers.

Ruelos said its goal is to enhance interoperability and capacity of both forces in the conduct of joint and combined operations in responding to natural disasters, crisis and enhance the war fighting capability of the Filipino forces.

"The exercise is designed to further enhance PH (Philippine) and US forces in capability development in the conduction of not only traditional military training but with civil military projects focusing on reaching out towards priority communities.

It is one of the many pre-Balikatan activities being held nationwide.

Air assault is one of the many combined exercises being conducted as part of the Field Training Exercises (FTX) and eventually on the Combined Live Fire Exercise (CALFEX) which will be held on April 20 to 30.

The CH-47 Chinook is an American twin-engine, tandem rotor heavy-lift helicopter.

Its primary roles are troop movement, artillery placement and battlefield resupply.

It has a wide loading ramp at the rear of the fuselage and three external-cargo hooks. With a top speed of 170 knots (196 mph, 315 km/h) the helicopter was faster than contemporary 1960s utility helicopters and attack helicopters.

The CH-47 is among the heaviest lifting Western helicopters. It takes its name from the Native American Chinook people.

While the UH-60 is a four-bladed, twin-engine, medium-lift utility helicopter manufactured by Sikorsky Aircraft.

Sikorsky submitted the S-70 design for the United States Army's Utility Tactical Transport Aircraft System (UTTAS) competition in 1972.

The Army designated the prototype as the YUH-60A and selected the Black Hawk as the winner of the program in 1976, after a fly-off competition with the Boeing Vertol YUH-61.
