KALAMANSIG, Sultan Kudarat -- Suspected communist guerrillas ambushed and killed workers and an official of a M and S logging firm operating in the mountains of this town, police here said.
Senior Inspector Glenn Mar B. Avisa, Kalamansig PNP
officer-in-charge, identified the fatality as Edgardo Valenzuela, 62, area
supervisor of M & S Logging company, Rolando Toledo, 28, company guard and
Nel Anthony Perreza, company driver.
Another company guard, Jimmy Torion, was not hurt but the
gunmen took his service firearm.
The victims were on board a company owned Toyota Land
Cruiser heading toward Camp
Merrel in Barangay
Sabanal when about 30 heavily armed New Peoples Army (NPA) guerrillas set two
improvised explosive devices and strafed the vehicle in Sitio Malayat, Barangay
Limulan, Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat at 8:15 a.m.
Quoting the survivor, police investigators said the gunmen
approached the vehicle and took the two security guards’ firearm.
Torion was spared by the suspects.
Manhunt has been launched by the Kalamansig PNP and members
of the Marine Battalion Landing Team (MBLT-8).
Motive of the ambush remained unknown but police
investigators believed the ambush was carried out by the communist guerillas
because of the firm's refusal to shell out 'protection money.'
Sources said the logging company, a subsidiary of DM
Consunji company, has been received extortion demands, called 'protection
money' from communist guerillas so the rebels won't harass company workers.
Following the ambush, government forces were sent to the
logging area to ensure safety of company workers.
