Two NPA rebels surrender to Army units in Misamis Oriental

From the Philippine News Agency (Dec 9): Two NPA rebels surrender to Army units in Misamis Oriental

Two New People's Army (NPA) fighters voluntarily surrendered themselves, together with their weapons, to troopers of the 58th Infantry Battalion in Claveria town, Misamis Oriental last Monday.

Major Ezra Balagtey, Eastern Mindanao Command spokesperson, said the duo surrendered an M-4 assault rifle and an M-1 Garand carbine.

He declined to identify the two for security reasons but said that one of the surrenderees was an NPA leader.

The two surrendered due to differences in policies, infighting among themselves, the hardship being away from their family and being always on the run.

"We have noticed the increase of NPAs surrendering with firearms since October this year with November posting as the highest with 10 firearms. The 46 surrenderees we accounted since October yielded a total of 22 firearms or a ratio of 1:2 which means that one out of two surrenderees surrendered firearms,” Eastern Mindanao Command head Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad said.

The surrenderees will likely receive remuneration of Php75,000 and Php20,000 for M-4 and M-1 respectively.

Likewise both surrenderee will be enrolled to the Misamis Oriental Integration Program to start a new life.

Baladad repeated his offer to the NPAs to lay down their arms and live a peaceful life and avail of the livelihood program and other assistance offered by the government for their well-being.

"We are again calling on our brothers who are continuously deceived by the communist propaganda to lay down their arms. We ensure you that we will work with other stakeholders for you to start a new life and join your family in the mainstream society," he said.
