From Tempo (Oct 22): Soldier killed in CdO encounter
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – A soldier was killed and two militiamen were wounded in an encounter with members of the New People’s Army (NPA) at the boundary of Malitbog and Impasug-on here.
Malitbog Vice Mayor Garry Casino said the encounter between the troopers of the 8th Infantry Battalion and the NPA fighters occurred in Barangay San Luis the other day.
Casino said residents in the area left homes due to the encounter and for fear of escalated firefight.
Meanwhile, farmers from Medina town complained yesterday morning that they were allegedly barred by the 5th IB from entering Cagayan de Oro City.
Six ten-wheeler trucks loaded with farmers belonging to the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) were reportedly blocked in a checkpoint in Medina town.
The farmers were reportedly on their way to CdO to attend a rally.
Lt. Nimbra, commander of the 58th IB, said the checkpoint is a mere security procedure to ensure that no weapons are being brought in Cagayan de Oro City.
