The Philippine Marines was verifying if Jordanian journalist Baker Atyani was in Sulu when military men clashed with Abu Sayyaf bandits in Patikul Sunday morning, according to Lt. Col. Randolph Cabangbang, spokesman of the Western Mindanao Command. Cabangbang said the soldiers were in Barangay Bakong checking reports if Atyani's group and the kidnapped European bird watchers were in the area when the Marines clashed with the bandits under Radullan Sahiron and Tahil Sali. "The purpose of the operations is to verify reports that these kidnap victims were in the area," Cabangbang told reporters on Monday.... The encounter last Sunday left at least 14 dead including four Marines. Cabangbang said the names of the casualties would be released by the Philippine Marines....
