BACOLOD CITY: Two more suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) were killed and 32 families were displaced in a series of clashes on Tuesday in Sitio Cupad in Barangay Macagahay, Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental.

Army spokesman 1Lt. Mary Liza Joy de Guzman said the two slain rebels were left behind at the encounter site by their fleeing comrades, following a 20-minute gun battle with 62nd Infantry Battalion (62IB) soldiers.

De Guzman added that the fleeing rebels were also encountered by a blocking force of the 62IB that led to a firefight that lasted for 15 minutes, in Sitio Mantauyan in Barangay Macagahay. No casualties were reported on the government side.

Recovered from the encounter sites were an M16 assault rifle with four magazines containing ammunition, a 12 gauge shotgun with two pieces of ammunition, a.38 caliber revolver with six pieces of ammunition, a rifle grenade, a binocular, two backpacks, two sling bags, two bandoliers, and a power bank.

Two weeks ago, five rebels were also killed in an encounter with 62IB soldiers in Barangay Quintin Remo, which is also in Moises Padilla, and four others in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.

The latest encounter in Barangay Macagahay also temporarily displaced 32 families, who are now being secured by the concerned local government unit, who also provided them with food packs, de Guzman said.

Meanwhile, the report said the skirmishes displaced at least 32 families, who sought shelter at the evacuation center in Sitio Mantauyan and were provided food assistance by the Moises Padilla Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict through the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.

"We again call on the wounded and fleeing rebels to voluntarily surrender. The government forces are giving you a chance to return to the fold of the law. The troops of 62IB and Philippine National Police will not stop hunting you to ensure peace and development in central Negros," the 62IB further said.

In April, an encounter in Sitio Lower Tiyos, Barangay Quintin Remo also led to the death of Jose "Jojo" Albores, one of the leaders of the "kangaroo court" under the Central Negros Front 1 of the NPA's Leonardo Panaligan Command.
