LEGAZPI CITY, January 18 (PIA) – The Commission on Human Rights in Bicol (CHR-5), on Monday, condemned the ambush of the New People’s Army (NPA) to military forces in this city which led to the death of three soldiers and left one hurt.

Lawyer Arlene Alangco, Regional Human Rights Director for Bicol, released a statement saying that “it is never justified to use violence or force in pursuit of (these) ideologies.”

“All are called upon, both state and non-state actors, to adhere to the rule of law and respect International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and all other domestic laws of the country,” Alangco said.

The soldiers who are members of the Philippine Army’s (PA) 9th Infantry Division were attacked on Sunday morning in Barangay Banquerohan while travelling on a motorcycle.

The soldiers wore civilian clothes.

Police Regional Office 5 (PRO-5) spokesperson Major Malu Calubaquib identified the fatalities as Corporal Joemar Maravilla, Private First Class Ronald Zamora, and Private First Class Reymar Palencia. Another soldier, Sergeant Ferdinand Ignas was wounded.

A report said that the soldiers who were deployed at Community Support Program of the PA coordinated with Legazpi police for the entry of heavy equipment of a private contractor for a road opening in Barangay Villahermosa in Daraga going to Barangay Bariis in Legazpi City.

Moreover, the PRO-5 issued a statement Sunday afternoon, condemning the ambush. PRO-5 director Police Brigadier General Bartolome Bustamante said it was a blatant disregard of the law, and an utter lack of respect for human lives.

“This dastardly act is another addition to the communist group’s long list of crimes and further cement their reputation as a terrorist group,” Bustamante said.

On Monday morning, the NPA owned the attack in a press statement. (PIA5/DDC/CHR-5/PRO-5)
