KIANGAN, Ifugao Sept. 4 (PIA) - - The province of Ifugao successfully commemorated the 75th Victory Day in this municipality on Wednesday(Sept. 2) honouring the gallantry and sacrifices of World War II soldiers and guerrillas, and the frontliners against the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) .

With the theme "75 Years.. Celebrating the Heroism of the Past, Present & Future", the activity started with Eucharistic celebration, wreath laying, gun salute and the program with Congressman Solomon Chungalao as keynote speaker , represented by his chief of staff lawyer Edmond Kindipan.

Chungalao stated that the commemoration is not for the surrender of Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita, rather it for the gallantry, heroism, valor and sacrifice of the Filipino soldiers including Ifugao guerillas that gave us the independence that we now enjoy yet on many occasions take for granted, as well as the modern day heroes leading the fight against an unseen enemy-the COVID-19.

“While today’s occasion afford an opportunity to commemorate the gallantry, heroism and valor of people who fought during the World War II, I also take this opportunity to pay tribute to our modern heroes – our frontliners. God bless your sacrifices and best efforts. And may God keep you safe always,” Chungalao said.

He also reiterated the government’s appeal to the populace of obeying basic health protocols, courtesy and discipline.

Governor Jerry Dalipog , meanwhile, said everyone should be thankful as the Victory Day is not only a momentous day but a precious moment in the Philippine history, the tribute which was written and sealed teaches every Filipino the virtue of patriotism and comradeship, as we are determined to embrace the common thread of peace, freedom and victory.

He also stressed that in this time of peril, everyone should stay strong, brave and resilient and should not only live for themselves but for others as only then that peace exists.

“Let us be heroes ourselves and follow what our government says – to be disciplined and follow protocols. In this way. We will save lives, especially the lives who will mold the future of our nation. May we all be victorious in our fight against this pandemic. So let us all keep safe,” Dalipog stated.

Retired Brigadier General Ramon Yogyog of the Philippine Army narrated some important accounts about the WWII and how General Yamashita of the Japanese Imperial army entered and surrendered in Kiangan, Ifugao on Sept 2, 1945 ending WWII in Asia Pacific.

In commemoration of this historic event, Republic Act No. 11120 declared September 2 of every year a special nonworking holiday in the province of Ifugao.

As precautionary measure for the health and safety of everyone, the organizers in this year’s event established a triage area, and the limited attendees wearing face masks and face shields were checked based on the submitted lists of participants.
